Chapter 5

The Surprise

Chloe

As soon as I open my apartment door, the silence and loneliness sets in. I miss Ally and Sid. This place feels so empty without them. There’s no music playing, no one dancing or laughing through the place.

“You need to get a life, Chlo,” I murmur to myself.

I think about dating and wince. I’m not ready for that life. Yet, I don’t know if I can do the casual sex thing. Yup, I’m all talk. I’ve only ever been with one guy.

Not that I haven’t thought about changing that. I’m just not ready to sign up for that disappointment. My vagina deserves better.

I kick off my shoes and start to strip out of my clothes as I move through the quiet space. Once in my panties and bra, I flop down on my bed and stare up at the ceiling.

My thoughts turn to Sid. She dodged a huge bullet. I truly think this meeting with Clayton will be good for her. Sidney has sacrificed so much for me. I only want to see her happy.

She has such a kind heart. Yet it’s guarded. She’s been even more guarded since the indictment. I have to be cautious about how I sell tomorrow night to her.

I tap my lip in thought. I snap my fingers as I think of how to spring this on her. Jumping up from the bed, I go to grab the envelope from the table by the door, where I left it.

Envelope and phone in hand, I pad to the kitchen for a glass of wine and then head back into my room. I dial Sid as I sit on the bed and fold my legs in front of me. Sid picks up as I take a sip from my glass.

“Hey, Chloe, what’s up?”

“Hey, girl. How are you holding up?”

“I’m fine. Thinking about going shopping tomorrow for some retail therapy.”

I snort. Just like Sid, she’s a shopaholic. I bet that’s how she plans to celebrate her victory. Not on my watch.

“Well, I think we should celebrate. I’m taking you out tomorrow. No arguments allowed. You can buy something to wear when you go shopping.”

I can almost see her rolling her eyes in my head. I bite my lip to keep in my excitement. I don’t want to tip my hand too soon.

To be honest, I’m not even sure why I’m so excited. I don’t know if it’s for Sid or for me. Maybe it’s time I explore dating. This could be an opportunity for me to get out of this funk and move on with my life.

“Okay, fine. I’ll let you take me out, but where are we going?”

“That, my dear, is a surprise. Just make sure you look sexy. I’ve got the rest.”

“Chloe,” she groans in warning.

“You’ll thank me later.”

“Will I really?”

“You make me sound like I’d sell my best friend to the highest bidder. I’ve got your back, hun.”

“It’s because you say things like that I worry.”

“You love me. You know I’ve got you. I’m so excited. This is the first time you’re going out in a year and a half. We’re going to make it a night to remember.”

“Okay, I’m in, but let me call you back. I’m trying to get this last blog post of the day up. Love you.”

“Love you too, Sid. Later.”
