“Is it true?”

She sighs. “I had different lawyers look at the will.”

“He put it in his will?” I sputter in shock and steer my eyes to Reid. “Did you know that?”

“No. Of course not.” He appears just as shocked.

My mind starts to make assumptions, and the loudest one escapes. “Is that why you got involved with me?”

He scrunches up his face. “Cassie, no. I had no idea. My feelings are real. You know that.”

Dad reaches for my arm. “Cassie, let’s go.”

I look at Aunt Helena, feeling hurt. “You invited me here to be with Reid because of Grandfather’s will?”

She turns her head. “No, I’ve been meaning to tell you that—”

“You never intended to make amends with Dad. This whole summer with you was a lie. You lured me here for your selfish reasons.”

I storm past my parents, marching out of the kitchen.

“Cassie, wait.” Reid catches me before I go up the stairs. “You believe me, don’t you? I didn’t know. Everything between us is genuine.”

I don’t look at him as I say, “I need a moment.”

Pulling away, I run upstairs to my room, lock the door, and slide down to the hardwood.

Grandfather indeed was a twisted man. To think he stated in his final will that I have to marry Reid for him to inherit all of this is just sad. Reid grew up here and learned everything. He’s a Radcliff. Meanwhile, Dad took us from it. Now it all makes sense.

But what am I going to do?

I love Reid and want forever with him. I don’t want to marry him for what’s in Grandfather’s will.
