Aunt Helena throws her hands up. “I’m sorry, Cassandra,” she apologizes on his behalf. “I’ll talk to him.”

I shake my head. “No, it’s fine. I’m sure he’ll come around.” Hopefully.

A sweet smile forms as she touches my arm. “Let’s talk over dinner.”

Draping her arm around my back, we mosey into the dining room and share a lot over the delicious meal Genevieve prepared. Though I find my aunt’s company enjoyable, I still want Reid to join us.

I watch the doorway for him, only to learn moments later from Genevieve that he snuck off the estate.

Geez.

I won’t let his avoidance bother me. It’s only the first day. We have the whole summer to rebuild, and my gut tells me we will.

I miss Aunt Helena in the morning since she leaves early for work. But the person whose friendship I’m on a mission to recapture is around.

Genevieve informs me Reid is in his room. So I linger in the passage, waiting for him to step out. He won’t be able to sneak off again.

My heart leaps as he opens the door at last.

I stand firm, pasting on a smile when Reid exits.

He hisses at my sight, shuts the door, and walks past me.

“Morning.” I trail him closely. So close that I catch a pleasant scent. “Um, how about—”

“I’m meeting friends,” he deadpans as he turns into the kitchen, grabbing a to-go bottle from the fridge.

“Cool. I’d love to meet your friends.”

“No.” He opens the door to the garage, adding, “We’re not hanging out. We’re not doing anything.”

I draw air through my teeth and hurry by him, getting into the passenger side of the Jaguar. With any luck, he doesn’t leave in another car, and my effort turns out to be futile and ridiculous.

Reid marches up to the door and orders, “Get out.”

“Nope.” I fold my arms, relaxing back in the seat. “I’m going with you. I’m not leaving your side until we talk and reach a good place between us.”

He clicks his tongue and rubs his forehead. “You’re acting childish.”

I blurt a short laugh. “You’re mad that I have friends. But I’m the childish one?”

He shifts from one leg to the other, jaw stiffening. As his phone pings, he checks the screen and growls under his breath. “Fine. Whatever.”

I internally celebrate as he marches around the car and hops in behind the wheel, taking off.

Soon, Reid. I’ll get under that skin.
