Mom ambles to my side with a slice of key lime pie. “Is he bummed you won’t be here for the summer?”

“Yeah. But we have plenty ahead, and we’re going to the same college.”

After a forkful, she has me cracking up with her moan and wiggles. “So good,” she remarks excitedly.

“I guess so.” Her eyes widen as I quickly break off a piece and stuff it into my mouth. “Oh wow. That is good.”

“Hey!” Mom moves the plate before I take another piece. “You could just cut a slice for yourself. Always eating off my plate.”

I laugh while licking my fingers. “Cause I’m your child.”

“Geez.” She chuckles. “Excited to see Reid again, huh.”

“Immensely.” I perk up at another onslaught of memories. “Can’t wait. I miss him so much.”

“I’m sure he misses you, too.” She bumps my side before going to the porch couch, watching the fiery orange sunset while finishing her dessert.

I dawdle in place, admiring her faux locs and how streaks of light illuminate her smooth, bronzy-brown skin. My mom is a gorgeous woman who carries herself with dignity, grace, and humility. She and Dad are a great match, but I wonder if there were challenges when he brought her into the Radcliff house.

My body tingles at the realization that by this time tomorrow, I’ll be in Connecticut with my dear cousin, and I can’t wait to see how much has changed.

Reid. Have you missed me as badly as I’ve missed you?
