“All right. So, how’s it going there so far?”

His question causes me to smile from ear to ear. “It’s been great. Reid’s awesome. So is my aunt. Oh, want to see my room?” I turn the phone to give him a virtual tour.

“Wow,” Logan laughs out. “It’s practically bigger than my house.”

“Shut up.” I giggle while bringing the phone back to my face. “It’s a lot, but it’s still nice. I don’t mind. It was my bedroom when I lived here as a child.”

“Cool.”

I relax on the window bench and cross one leg over the other. “How’s it going with your basement?”

“Good. Moving fast.” He bows his head and expels a miserable groan. “I’m missing you. There’s no company like yours, Cass. It feels empty here.”

“Aw, Logan.” I pout. “It’s not forever. I’ll be home in two months.”

“Hope so.” His mood seems to lighten again. “Remember I’m coming to get you if you’re not back in time.”

That pulls a giggle out of me. “Don’t worry,” I assure him. “I won’t bail on our drive to college.”

“Better not.” He lowers his head for a second and sighs. “Cass, um, think about the rental. Okay?”

“I will.”

“Talk later.”

“All right.” I wave while smiling. “Bye, Logan.”

“Love you,” he hurries to add, auburn eyes seeming hopeful.

“You too,” I say and end the video call.

An unsettling feeling stays with me. Something’s different with Logan. I’m just not sure what and when it started.

Leaning back, I stare out the window, noticing the change in the sky. Dark clouds are quickly moving in and hiding the sun. It appears as if it’s going to rain.

As suspected, droplets start coming down soon after, creating light pitter-patters on the window.

My mind drifts back to Reid. I return downstairs and stroll into the living room, staring out the patio doors. The boys are no longer in the yard. I watch as the rainfall turns heavy, beating the flowers and trees.

“I guess we’re not going to the pier this evening,” Reid says as he comes beside me, wearing sweatpants and a fresh tee. He smells like an expensive body wash.

“Guess not. Mark left?”

“Yeah.” He crumples his brows and folds his arms. “You into him?”

“What?” I sputter a short laugh. “No. He’s a nice guy but not my type.”

He falls quiet for a few beats, then says, “I’m sorry I snapped at you for having a best friend. It was silly and uncalled for.”

I smile. “Apology accepted. It only took you four days later.”

Reid clicks his tongue and huffs.

“I understand where it came from,” I add with a playful squint.

Still holding my gaze, he gradually pulls his lips to one side. “Well, let’s just move forward as we agreed.”

“Mmhm.”

Oh damn. When did Reid’s eyes become so mesmerizing? I bet girls fall under his spell and discard their panties with one glance.

Wait. Why are we just staring at each other?

Reid clears his throat and twists to the window as if having the same thought. Hugging myself, I also turn, and we watch the rain in silence.

The slight carnal rush in my body shouldn’t be there. Not when he’s my cousin.

Yet, I can’t stop myself from stealing glances out of the corner of my eye, wondering how Reid treats the girls he takes to bed. Based on how he massaged my leg the other night, I bet he’s a tender and considerate lover.

My god. Where did that thought come from?
