My body heats up whenever I dare to meet his gaze, and embarrassment pervades me for regarding my cousin in such an inappropriate manner.

“Any plans for tonight?” Aunt Helena asks.

“There’s a bonfire on the beach,” Reid answers. “Should be fun.”

Our eyes lock for the longest time, and warmth pools between my thighs as I recall how he felt on me in the grass and that brief yet hot touch.

“Good.” Aunt Helena’s pleased remark snaps me out of it. “Not too late.”

“We won’t be,” Reid assures her.

I keep my head down, finish dinner, then go upstairs to change into a high-low top, shorts, and slippers for the beach.

My heart starts to sprint again as I meet Reid at his car shortly.

We’re quiet for the drive from the estate, but I start a conversation as he turns onto the road. “Will there be a lot of people?”

Reid hums before answering. “Not too much. It won’t be a huge crowd.”

“Got it.”

We fall quiet again.

“Do you have a boyfriend in Philadelphia? Is that who Logan is?”

I look over and tell him, “No, Logan is like my brother. I don’t have a boyfriend.” I hope that was out of curiosity, and he isn’t getting any ideas.

Still, I find myself asking in return, “How about you? You’re one girlfriend short, considering you broke it off with Bristol. How many more do you date?”

Reid sniffs. “Why do you think I’m a player? Is it because of my looks?” A cocky smirk follows, making me roll my eyes.

“I’m just messing with you.”

“Good because I’m not. I only date one girl at a time, and I’m currently single.” Strange that hearing he’s single fills me with relief.

“Oh.” I look out the window, watching the array of trees we’re passing while fighting off the inappropriate tingles.

Reid turns at the sign for a private cove and continues until pulling into the parking area.

The bonfire is ablaze, spotlighting the faces. As he said, there aren’t a lot of kids. Maybe a little over ten.

“Hey, guys,” Mark greets us, smacking Reid’s hand. The others do the same and look at me with curiosity.

“This is Cassie,” Reid introduces. “My...cousin.” I catch the hesitation but ignore it.

“Hey.” I wave to the group before us.

“How’s it going, Cassie?” The only other black girl welcomes me. “Want something to drink?”

“No alcohol,” Reid declares.

I suck my teeth at him. “I can speak for myself. I don’t mind something light.”

He gives me a stern look. “Not even that.”

“Geez,” I grumble.

“Over here,” the girl says with a chuckle, and I walk with her to a cooler.
