“Huh. Good for you.” I turn to walk away.

“I trust that you’re happy to see your cousin again?” Her words stop me. “Jeff says she’s excited about the visit.”

I slant and look back at her. “I don’t care. She’s visiting you, not me.”

Her shoulders sink with a deep sigh, and blatant worry mists her forest-green eyes. “Reid, it’s not Cassandra’s fault. Jeff gave up everything Father wanted for him, and our relationship became strained. He decided to keep his family away. So please try to remember that while your cousin’s here. If you’re hostile, she won’t stay.”

“So?”

“You...” She clucks her tongue. “Be nice. I’d like to get to know my niece.”

“Fine, Mom. I’ll play nice.”

I pivot and march through the doorway, continuing down the passage to my room.

Cassie’s returning after seven fucking years. Does she think it’ll be like old times? That we’ll just pick up where we left?

Fuck that.

She had no desire to stay in touch, so I’ll continue giving her the same energy she gave me.
