“Good.” I gesture to everyone, saying, “Packed house.”

He shrugs. “Eh. I kept it light tonight.”

Reid and I exchange a knowing look.

“Cassie, hey.” Michelle waves me over to where she’s standing with Nichole.

“Go hang out,” Reid encourages. “I’ll be around.”

But not around me.

Geez. Get a grip. He’s not my boyfriend.

“Cool.” As I move through the cluster, I notice guys taking in my appearance with unabashed desire. It’s hard to find interest in anyone when my attention is on the one person I can’t ever have.

“Hey, girls. Nice seeing you both again.”

“You too,” Michelle says. She hands me a non-alcoholic drink. “I was going to text to see if you wanted to hang out. Maybe tomorrow?”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Awesome.”

Nichole points to the patio doors. “Let’s go outside. It’s getting stuffy in here.”

I follow the girls to the backyard, and we fall into chit-chat until Reid finds me soon after, drawing close to my side. “You good?”

“She’s fine,” Michelle tells him. “Don’t worry about your cousin. She’s in great hands.”

He snorts. “Sure.”

“She’s a sweetheart,” Nichole adds kindly, smiling at me. “Wish you lived here this whole time.”

“Me too,” Reid mutters under his breath. He lowers his gaze to the grass when I look at him.

“Radcliff!” We both turn in the direction, spotting Mark at the opened patio door. “Oh, right. Sorry, Cassie. I meant Reid.”

“I’ll be right back,” Reid tells me before walking away as if he wants to talk to me about something at the party and not at the house.

Hopefully, it’s not about the moment at the club. We can’t revisit it. I might crumble and confess my feelings, and our relationship as cousins might not stand a chance.

“So, I remember you mentioned skateboarding for fun,” Nicole draws back my focus. “How did you get into that?”

“My friend taught me. He’s pretty great at it.”

Michelle tapers her eyes to curious slits. “You said friend and not a boyfriend. Is it a crush?”

“No,” I stress with a shake of my head. “I’ve never seen Logan in that light. Always as a friend.”

“What about him?” Nichole asks after drinking. “How does your friend feel?”

“Logan’s never mentioned anything in the seven years we’ve known each other. Plus, he’s gone out with other girls.”

“Seven is a long time for nothing to happen,” Michelle wonders before finishing her drink.

A thought pops into my head. I forgot to call Logan back the other day.

“I’m getting another drink,” Michelle says. “Want anything?”
