There’s no way we’re just a fling. Not with how intense it is between us. It’s an unstoppable flame. How can Cassie treat it as anything less?

She bursts out laughing with the girls, and my body instantly tingles with hunger.

We’ve barely exchanged words or touches since the evening before, and upon Mark’s invitation to his daytime party, we walked to his house in a cloud of silence.

As crazy as it is, I miss Cassie after having no physical contact for such a short time. I want us to stare longingly at each other, hold her close, taste that mouth and the sweetness between her thighs. I want to be so much more. Why is she holding back?

“Here, man.” Mark hands me a light beer.

I open the can and chug while watching Cassie across the yard with Michelle and Nichole.

God, she’s beautiful. I like her cute yellow floral dress and how her dark curls dangle over her shoulders. Brown skin as radiant as ever. She’s a fucking goddess, and I’m obsessed.

“So, we have to figure out another spot for your bike before my mom returns from Spain,” Mark states. “She’ll tell your mom about it for sure.”

I flick from the stunning creature to look at him. “I’ll put it in storage. When is your mom coming?”

“Thursday, in time for the fourth of July weekend.” He drinks and glances in the direction of Cassie. “Your cousin is so damn hot and such a sweetheart. Is it okay if I ask her out?”

Anger instantly rises in my veins. I tighten my grip on the can, almost crushing it with the liquid still inside. “Stay the fuck away from her. She’s…” I stop myself as he breaks out laughing. “What’s so funny?”

“Ah, man.” He smacks my arm. “You’re so obvious, Reid.”

I furrow my brows. “What do you mean?”

“Come on. We’ve been friends for five years. I know what’s up.” He motions to Cassie with a nod. “Something’s going on between you two.”

I steer my gaze across the yard. “It’s complicated.”

“You’re not blood relatives. Why is it complicated?”

My shoulders droop. “She says it’s only for the summer. That it’s not serious.” I chug the rest of my beer.

“Is it?” he questions before drinking. “I mean, do you love her or something?”

That gives me a pause. It’s the only explanation for what’s going on inside me. Maybe that’s why I became so upset with Cassie. I’m scared I’m falling deeply, and she may not feel the same.

Mark nudges my arm. “Hope you figure it out. Anyway, we’re playing soccer.”

“Be over in a sec. Start without me.”

He moseys off and urges the guys towards the open part of the yard.

Retrieving the phone from my pocket, I send Cassie a quick text.

Follow me.

I watch as she rifles in her clutch, checks her phone, then looks around until spotting me.

After making sure no one’s watching us, I sneak into the house, climb the back stairs to the rooftop balcony, and wait.

Cassie emerges shortly.

I grasp her hand and brace her against the mesh panel in the shadowy corner.

“What do you—”
