Cassie snatched the air from my lungs the second she walked into the living room. My reaction took me by such a surprise that I all but ran away.

She’s so much more stunning. Glowing brown skin like desert sand at sunset, tone warm and smooth-looking. Lovely jet-black curls long over her shoulders. Big auburn eyes full of spark. Lips so plump. And that body…

My cousin has not only developed in her chest area, but she has curves now.

Sudden knocking at the door dissolves the dirty thoughts, and I stop pacing as Mom enters my room.

“What was that?” she grits.

I scrunch up my face in an attempt to act oblivious. “What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean.” She shifts her weight to one side and folds her arms. “You declined a hug and stormed off. Cassandra looked hurt, Reid.”

“Sorry.”

Leaning her head, she knits her brows while studying me. “Honey, I know it broke your heart when she left. But you can’t keep holding on to that.”

“Easier said than done,” I grumble and turn to the window. “The pain is still fresh like it happened only yesterday.”

Silence lingers until Mom lets out a heavy breath. “All I’m saying is, it isn’t healthy to remain cold. We should try to move forward.” I relax my shoulders at her loving touch on my back. “Give Cassie a chance, honey. Spend time with her and reconnect. Just try.” She retreats from me, and I turn around as she leaves my room.

It’d be a lie to say it isn’t great seeing Cassie after so long, but I’m sticking to the plan. I won’t get attached again.

No way.
