He retrieves more napkins from his bag to clean up. We fix our uniforms, and I pull my curls back into a bun, using my phone as a mirror.

Brandon nods toward the wooden door for me to go out first.

But before I do, he huffs at my back, “You still have until five o’clock with Sam.”

I snap around, lips pursed. “You…”

“What?” He smirks. “Pleasuring me doesn’t let you off the hook.”

“Pfft.” I stomp out of the old tower and head inside, just in time to finish lunch.

I’m still in awe at the size of Sam’s stylishly-decorated room and probably will always be whenever she invites me over.

Relaxing on the tufted bench at the foot of her large bed, Sam flicks on the TV and scrolls through movies on Netflix.

“So, Brandon’s pretty intense,” she says.

“Yeah.” A sudden ache blossoms between my thighs amid recalling the naughty act I performed at school today. “He can be sweet, too,” I add, smiling.

“It’s still so strange, seeing Brandon with a girlfriend. Even the way he looks at you.” She shakes her head in wonder. “It’s as if he loves you.”

I turn to mush, feeling hot all over. “No. Brandon is just... I don’t know. He still hasn’t told me much. How can we fall for each other when he’s still keeping secrets?”

She stops skimming through suspense movies and steadies on me. “Brandon’s life before Charleston is a mystery. People have tried asking Britney stuff, but she clams up and refuses to talk about it. Though,” She tilts her head back, recollecting, “I do remember Brandon used to see the guidance counselor twice a week. He stopped in our sophomore year. But he was still...” She shrugs. “Scary. However, he does seem a tad different of late.”

I scowl. “How so?”

A smile curls her lips. “Well, he’s in a relationship for the first time, and he looks happy.”

I snort, pretending like that doesn’t stir a delightful feeling.

Not finding anything on Netflix, we decide to binge-watch Kpop music videos.

At precisely five o’clock, my phone buzzes with a text from Brandon.

Time’s up.

Tell Sam to take your ass home

so you can ready for your date with me.

Butterflies horde my tummy.

That’s why he insisted on not staying long. He’s planned a date.

“You only smile like that for Brandon, you know,” Sam teases.

I suck my teeth. “This is how I always smile.”

She wobbles her head, brown hair dancing on her shoulders. “Your eyes sparkle a bit more for him.”

I consider it. No matter how Brandon frustrates me or displays his alpha traits, there’s something about him that consumes me without effort.

Sam drops me off at my house shortly.

Momma’s home from the hospital, but Dad’s staying late at the bakery, fulfilling orders for three separate events tomorrow.

After showering, I dress in a jeans skirt and a cute floral blouse. Momma enters my room while I’m styling my curls.
