“You remember the day you opened your acceptance letter to Pratt?”

“Of course.”

“And do you remember asking if we’d still be together in college?”

Kayla rolls her eyes. “Yes. Oh my gosh, Bran, you are so petty.” She giggles. “Are you seriously going to bring up how you proved it?”

I turn my head. “Not at all, babe. I just want you to keep what I said in mind.”

Threading our fingers, I tow her to the table where Mr. McNeil set her birthday cake and tap the wineglass with a fork before setting it down.

Everyone steers their attention to us. The women pull out their phones, readying for what’s about to happen. They all know, except for Kayla.

My oblivious girlfriend crumples her brows while smiling at me. “Are you giving me a birthday toast?”

I lightly brush her cheek with the back of my hand. “There’s no pressure to accept, baby. But I know you’d want them here for this.”

Her eyes expand as I lower on my bended knee and slip the diamond engagement ring from my pocket.

Laughter erupts, along with flashes from phones.

Sam and Britney are gushing together.

“Oh, God…” Kayla blinks profusely, trying to remain composed as her eyes water. She’s unable to stop smiling at me. “Brandon…”

“From the very first moment I saw you, you managed to pierce your way into my heart and tore down my walls. Just as you’ve shown me so much love, I’ve spent all these years devoted to expressing how I feel about you. There’s nothing else left to say, other than will you marry me, my little artist?”

Giggles burst from her lips. The tears flow freely.

Kayla nods and whimpers out, “Yes.”

Delightful cheers and handclaps echo in the air.

Excited, I quickly slide the ring onto her tiny finger and jump up to wrap my arms around her.

We share a passionate kiss in front of our family and friends, not having a care in the world.

When our lips finally ease apart, Kayla and I laugh and cry.

“Mine forever,” I rasp.

“Yours forever,” she mutters back.

Everyone crowds us, laughing in their genuine happiness.

Our parents and friends pry us apart for hugs and photos.

As the music resumes playing, I tow Kayla back into my arms, and we dance away on the rooftop to everyone’s watchful gaze.

“I love you, baby,” she tells me while peering up into my eyes.

“I love you, Kayla Decker.”

Her soft brown eyes glisten on the verge of more tears as her lips stretch into that heart-melting smile.

Time drifts by with us slow-dancing in the warm early summer night. And I can’t help but wander back to where our story began.

It’s sweet how the most beautiful thing in the world blossomed between us out of art and chaos.
