SIX

Four years.

Shit. What a frightening coincidence.

Kayla and I both suffered around the same time.

“Where were you?” Dad bellows from his office as I enter the front door.

I stall in the foyer and glance at him. “Went to a party.”

“A party?” he sputters in disbelief, walking out of the room.

“Yeah, Dad. Like most kids my age. Isn’t that a good thing?”

He relaxes his aged features. “I suppose it’s good you’re trying…something.” A sharp sigh escapes, and he rubs his forehead. “Your mother’s out with friends. She’ll be back late.” He always explains her absence, ever since she abandoned me when I needed her most. “If you’re hungry—”

“I already ate,” I interject. “I’m tired.”

“All right. Go on up to bed then.”

Dad veers back into his office. I jog upstairs, coming to a stop when I find Britney waiting in her doorway. “Speak.”

“Eric asked me out,” she admits.

“And isn’t that what you’ve wanted?”

“Yeah, but…” She wrings her fingers before her. “Are you okay with us? It doesn’t weird you out or anything?”

“Look, I don’t care, as long as Eric doesn’t hurt you. Besides, you both need to resolve those feelings and stop forcing yourselves to date other people.”

Friction leaves her appearance. “Thanks for not getting upset.”

I swivel to go into my room across from hers.

“So, you went to a party,” Britney mutters at my back. “That’s a first.”

“It’s not a big deal.”

“Brandon,” she stops me again. Her voice is soft, careful. “When are you going to open up to someone?”

Kayla zaps into my head like a bolt of lightning.

Without answering Britney, I plod into my room and shut the door.

All of a sudden, my body turns hot as if I’m in a sauna. I peel off my clothes and tread into the bathroom for a cold shower.

Kayla is haunting me.

The way she looked tonight, in that adorable, flowy yellow dress, curls let down. It’s arousing me so much I cave and start to beat off in the shower.

I had a tough time at the party, between watching her with Heath and deterring girls who thought they had a shot.

But I couldn’t leave Kayla. I needed to spend a few moments with her. Being in her presence, in her space, is the closest thing to touching.

Her scent. Her art.

Everything about her is all over her bedroom.
