NINE

Brandon is the last to enter the classroom. I wonder if he told Eric he drove me home from the party and lay in my bed. I hope he didn’t fabricate anything like I fear Heath may have.

So far, I’ve been the target of several judgy gazes, and I suspect it’s either because Heath and I were talking alone or he spread rumors.

Sam hasn’t heard anything, so that’s a relief.

She’s discussing drama club with Rajid and me when Brandon walks by to his seat.

After settling, he ignores her vibrant chatter and says aloud, “Morning, Kayla.”

In an instant, the classroom falls dead quiet.

Everyone’s watching us.

Rajid screws up his features into a frown, and Sam appears surprised, shifting in her seat.

Is this the first time Brandon’s addressed someone in class? A girl, at that? It can’t be.

“Hey, morning,” I reply with a calm smile, meanwhile inside, I’m buzzing like electrical wires.

“Enjoyed your weekend?” he asks, uncaring to the many stares.

Anxious, I play with my hands on my lap. “Yeah. Did you?”

He shrugs and steers his gaze to the front of the room as the teacher enters.

I catch Rajid’s grimace before he faces forward.

Sam whispers to me, “I need details.”

“I’ll tell you at lunch,” I whisper back, briefly sneaking a peek at Brandon.

He doesn’t glance at me again throughout the period, and that leaves a feeling of discontent.

We pass him and Steve in the hallway on the way to social studies. He still doesn’t look at me.

Sam and I take our seats. She jumps right to it, too eager to wait. “What happened?”

I touch my neck, shy for some reason. “Brandon drove me home on Friday, and we talked a little.”

“Brandon drove you from the party?” She carries her gray eyes over me as if seeking the ethereal door. “Kayla, how did you get Charleston’s most standoffish guy’s attention?”

I sputter an awkward giggle and shake my head. “Honestly, I have no clue.”

A sneaky smile teases her pink lips at the same time that she wiggles her brows. “Is there something brewing between you two?”

“Don’t get any ideas. It’s not like that.”

I’m lying to myself. It’s hard to deny how intrigued I am by Brandon Decker.

Sam harrumphs and zaps me out of my head.

I slant to see what caught her focus. Only for syrupy currents to bombard my body as Brandon lowers in the seat on my right.

He doesn’t utter a word, though. He’s looking at his phone.

Displeased, I crumple my forehead. So, he’s back to not acknowledging me?
