“That’s fine.” I shake her hand and smile in return.

Still beaming, she flicks to Sam. “Hey, Sammie. How’s it going? How’s drama club?”

“Great,” Sam replies, though still bothered by the whole Heath thing. She sighs and looks down at the grass.

Britney cuts to me. “Is something wrong?”

“No,” I answer fast and wobble my head.

“Only that Heath Turner is a total asshole,” Sam snaps aloud.

“Girls!” Mr. Worley warns, voice too playful. “This isn’t a social hour to catch up about your eventful weekend.”

“Sorry, sir,” we apologize in sync.

I’m unable to stop my eyes from roaming to Brandon. He’s already staring at me.

My heart leaps when he jumps up and comes over.

“Who’s an asshole?” he demands.

I eyeball him and look at Mr. Worley. He’s ignoring Brandon, flipping through his notes.

“It’s none of your concern,” I tell Brandon.

He stiffens his jaw and asks without taking his eyes off me, “Sam, did someone bother Kayla?”

I turn to her, hoping she doesn’t cave.

But Sam is staring at him open-mouthed. It’s as if she can’t believe Brandon knows she exists.

Britney snorts at her brother. “Why are you so concerned for Kayla, Bran?” She lifts her flawless brows and flashes a sly smirk.

“Hm.” He huffs and walks back to the tree where he was before, lowering against it.

I wince when I turn my head and catch Britney studying me with intent and a discerning smile.

“We should hang out,” she says.

“Cool,” I tell her, genuinely meaning it. Britney seems like a nice person. More warm and open, as opposed to her brother.

She flicks to Sam. “You too, Sammie. It’s fine to hang out, no matter if Eric used to have a crush on you.”

Sam’s gray eyes go wide. “He did not.”

“Mm-hm.” Britney chortles. “I’m not even jealous. You’re awesome.” She jerks her arm in a friendly way.

I wrinkle my temples, picking apart Britney’s words. Does that mean she and Eric are a thing now?

“Well, catch you girls later. Maybe we’ll relax by my pool this weekend.” She pushes to her feet and heads over to her brother, sitting with room between them.

Brandon glances at me again for a fleeting second then looks at his textbook, tapping a pen on the page.

Realizing something, I twist to Sam and confirm, “Britney can’t touch her brother either?”

She shakes her head. “No one, including her.”

I frown, curious about Brandon. “Why is that?”
