“She has plans,” Brandon informs them.

Sam tries to hide her smile, whispering to me, “Are you officially dating?”

“No—”

“Kayla’s mine,” Brandon proclaims aloud.

Kids freeze in the hallway with their mouths and eyes wide open in utter shock.

It’s as quiet as a communion service at church.

“What the…” I wheel around to him. “I told you, you can’t just declare that.”

“It’s better if everyone knows. I don’t want other guys asking you out.” He briefly flicks to Rajid before walking down the hallway, leaving me dumbfounded.

“Wow,” Sam sputters. “Brandon Decker has a girlfriend.” Her gray eyes are still stretched open with disbelief. “He’s never dated anyone.”

“We’re not…uhh…” I shake my head and shut the locker.

“He hates when people touch him,” Rajid reminds, clenching his jaw.

“No need to mention the obvious,” Sam mumbles. “Kayla knows.”

He ignores that, adding, “He’s also a member of the moron population.”

His attitude irks me, and I feel compelled to defend Brandon even though he just publicized something without my acceptance. “Look, Brandon can be a bit direct and demanding, but he’s not a moron.”

“We’ve been around him longer,” Rajid counters, seeming upset. “He’s not the type of guy you should fall for.”

Sam twists to him with a scowl.

Composing himself, Rajid clears his throat and eases away. “I’ll see you two in class.”

She watches him leave, then looks back at me and shakes it off. “Are you hanging out with Brandon after school?” She wiggles her brows. “Is that why you refused the ride yesterday? How did he suddenly decide you’re his?”

I groan and splay a hand. “Sam, I have no idea. We’ve talked a few times. He waited for me yesterday, and we grabbed a bite to eat.” I’ll leave out the part where he climbed into my room, much less bought me an expensive easel.

Her features soften. “Aw, that’s kind of sweet. I had no idea Brandon was like that.”

I motion for us to head to class.

“So, how is it with him? Does he touch you in private?” Curiosity peppers her voice and glistens in her eyes.

“Sam, we’re not together. Brandon drew that conclusion on his own.”

She lines her forehead. “So, you don’t want to date him?”

I roll my shoulders back. “He’s such an alpha. Aside from that, how will a relationship work if we can’t touch at all? It’ll be like walking on eggshells. Talk about exhausting.”

Sam stiffens as she glimpses something behind me.

“Hey, Sammie,” Eric greets. “Kayla.”

I swivel, spotting him and Brandon enter the classroom. Brandon scowls. I guess he heard.

Throughout the period, it’s back to ignoring me. It’s the same for social studies. Mr. Worley leads us to the garden again.

Brandon doesn’t meet my gaze once, and I wonder if I’ve hurt his feelings. It shouldn’t even matter. He’s the one telling people we’re together when we’re not.
