As a police officer, it was his duty to provide first aid. Faith wasn’t badly injured, and she prayed the people in the other vehicle weren’t either. Still, a bolt of fear jolted through her. She trembled. The broken windows allowed cold and sleet to seep into the truck’s cab. Something niggled her, but Faith couldn’t get her brain to operate correctly. Her thoughts felt muddled. She grabbed Chase’s arm before he could back away from her. “Please be careful.”

“I will.” He kissed her forehead.

The move was tender and sweet and inexplicably brought tears to her eyes. She blinked them back. By the time her vision cleared, Chase was halfway up the steep incline, headed for the road. He held a first aid kit in one hand.

Something flashed in the trees. Another vehicle had arrived at the scene of the accident. Faith’s chest clenched as she realized it was a silver truck. Suddenly, the memory trying to work its way into her consciousness burst through. They’d passed the same truck waiting on an offshoot road. Chase’s fears about the broken pipe at her parents’ house roared back to life as Faith realized he’d been right all along. They’d walked into a trap.

The ice on the road wasn’t because of the weather. It’d been planted.

“Chase!” Faith screamed his name just as the sound of a gunshot ripped through the air.

She was helpless to do anything as her best friend crumpled to the ground.

God, no! Not Chase!

She popped open the glove box, desperately fumbling for some kind of weapon. She refused to even consider it might be too late to protect him. Tears ran down her cheeks.

The dark-clad figure turned toward the truck. His arm rose.

A surge of survival instinct pushed away her terror for Chase as Faith pressed on the button to release her seat belt. Something whizzed past her ear and thudded into the door panel.

A bullet.

Faith dropped to the floor board. Her breath came short and fast.

She was trapped.
