“Don’t worry about it, Row. I’m completely fine to rest more. My body is telling me to do nothing but sleep right now. Well, mostly sleep.” He gave a slight grin.

“Right, okay. You won’t even notice we’re gone, and I’ll have food for you when I get back.”

I was unsure how to leave Sam just then. My hands twisted in front of me and I crossed and uncrossed my legs. Determined to stop fidgeting, I stood and gave an awkward wave. Sam reached for my belt loop and drew me back towards him.

“I’ll notice you’re gone, Row. But please, eat, you need to take care of yourself. I’ll see you in a few hours.”

I bent over and hugged him. “Don’t try to stand without me.”

“I’ll be good,” he breathed into my hair. I pulled back, our arms still wrapped around each other, face to face. Our noses almost touched, and I stilled myself, unsure of what to do next. Sensing my awkwardness, Sam moved his lips to the side of my cheek and gave me a quick kiss. I stood, and he sank back down into the mattress, eyes heavy.

I walked in a rush down the hallway after Dean. My cheek was on fire where he had given me a quick peck. My heart fluttered, and I almost passed by Dean in my trance.

“You must be hungry,” Dean said, in step after me.

“Yes, I’m starving. Thank you for getting us to the mess hall tonight. I’m glad for your help with our assignments too.”

“Well, we have a lot to go over and figure out,” Dean huffed. “Especially now.”

We started on the stairs. BeLew took them two at a time as I struggled to keep up. “What do you mean, especially now?” I asked when we approached swinging metal doors.

Dean opened a door to the mess hall, showed a badge, then led me in by my elbow. The smell of food filled my nostrils, and my stomach cramped in response. He moved his arm fully around my waist and whispered in my ear, “Now that we have to get rid of your new husband.”
