I ran my fingers through his hair and settled closer to him, trying to comfort him. I couldn’t get close enough, knowing I almost lost him. “Thank you for telling me. Nothing between us anymore, okay?”

“Except Dean. Let’s not forget that issue. So, what now? We sneak around like teenagers? How many times can you help the two hundred before he gets suspicious?”

Sam was right. Dean’s passive-aggressive comment was a one-time deal. He went to extraordinary lengths to ensure that Sam and I stayed apart. Dean always got his way. That he hadn’t won me over yet drove him further over the edge. If he knew Sam and I were together, there would be worse than toilets in Sam’s future.

In fact, Sam’s safety aboard this vessel surprised me. The Galene was not in a convoy with us. Accidents happened and Dean had friends on this ship. Sam could be zip-tied and chucked over the side in the dead of night, and who would do anything about it? “Has Dean tried to do anything to you? I mean, threaten you?”

“No, and I don’t think he will.”

“Don’t be so sure.”

“He would lose you forever, Rowan. If I disappeared or got hurt, you would never give in to him. He’s smart. Probably the smartest fuck I’ve ever come across. It’s too bad he focuses all that on serving himself.”

“Dean is a special brand of horrible, but his entire focus isn’t to hurt others. It sometimes comes out that way, I’ll admit.”

“No, he wants power at any cost,” Sam shot back. “He wants to influence and control those around him. He gets off on it. You see that?”

“It is power, Sam. It has and always will be power. That doesn’t explain his obsession with me.”

“It’s not love? You two have a history.”

“No,” I almost laughed. “He said it was dedication, in fact. I asked him. He said dedication counts more than love.”

“Does he owe you something? Why is he dedicated to you? Is it because of the baby?”

“You’re giving him too much credit. It’s always what suits Dean, what gets him what he wants.”

“And what could he get from you?”

Thoughts swam in my head about what Dean was after. He was involved in so many oddities with the agriculture unit, chemistry, and the two hundred growing poppy flowers.

His desire for me didn’t make sense. It didn’t fit.

My brain buzzed like fire and, for a moment, the mess we were in suddenly became clear. I stood and paced back and forth.I recalled his incessant questions about my night terrors. He drove me insane by constantly asking. How many times had I told him not to worry about them?

Sam studied my movements. “Rowan, are you okay?”

Dean knows. He knows about me.

“Sam, it’s time I tell you about my past. And I need to start with my dreams.”
