Sam reached past me and grabbed Lori’s arm. “We need to go. Is she okay? Are the boys.”

Lori nodded her head. “We can manage. I was hoping I could find Luke. I - I just…”

Sam’s eyes widened like saucers, so big I could see myself in them. But it wasn’t my face that looked back at me. It was bright orange streaks that flickered in the blue and black. And then I felt the heat. It came in waves that hit my back and stung my exposed skin.

Lori screamed for the boys to get up. I felt them move around me and heard Sam’s muffled voice somewhere in my brain, but I remained still. “Boys!” he yelled. “Take the entrance… twenty-seven floors down… go without us… Rowan, are you listening?” Lori pulled at my arm. I smelled the smoke that fogged the outdoor lamps and filled my lungs. My brain clicked back and forth between reality and my dreams.

The billows of smoke escaped into the sky.

The fire on the deck.

Sam ran towards it.

This was the time to take control, to change my fate, to change everything. Next, Sam would run to the flames, and I couldn’t lose him. I could never do this for my sister, but I could find the strength for him, for us, for our baby.

My eyes closed, and I thought back to my visions. I pictured myself in my dream. The sensations were the same, but the intensity felt stronger. Reality mixed in with my premonitions and I searched my mind, making the pictures flash in sequence over and over. The smells and feelings were familiar but brighter and stronger.

Fire and smoke cover the sky.

Sam is running towards it, and I’m left on the deck.

I’m bleeding on the sand.

I’m slapped by leaves running through trees.

The same pictures in the same sequence again and again.

Fire and smoke cover the sky.

Sam is running towards it, and I’m left on the deck.

I’m bleeding on the sand.

I’m slapped by leaves running through trees.

What happens next, Rowan?

Fire and smoke cover the sky.

Sam is running towards it, and I’m left on the deck.

Luke sits handcuffed to something on the deck. He’s calling out to Sam.

Sam shook my shoulders, and I pushed him away. “Stop,” I yelled. “I’m seeing it. Stop!”

Fire and smoke cover the sky.

Sam is running towards it, and I’m left on the deck.

Luke sits handcuffed to something on the deck. He’s calling out to Sam.

He’s screaming as wild flames engulf his body.

My eyes shot open. “It’s Luke,” I screamed. “We have to save Luke.”
