“Whattimedidyou come back?” Everest asks, sleepily when the sun wakes her up.

“Around three, I believe.”

She’s feeling all over me since I climbed into bed naked. “How do you feel?

“Horny,” I whisper in her hair.

“You’re always horny, WALTON.”

There is no bite in her whisper, and her exploration of my body contradicts her fake indignation.

“And it’s your fault.” I kiss the top of her head. “I’ve ordered a special birthday cake.”

She freezes then sits up, making the cutest yuck face. “I don’t eat cake.”

I know that asshole force fed her birthday cake and she’ll hate it forever. “It’s not for you to eat, Shortstack. I promise you’ll love it.”

“Impossible.”

I sit up and kiss her forehead. “Very possible. I’ll let you know when he eats it.”

Her eyes light up when she catches my meaning. “It is wrong to think you’re sexy when you have murder on your mind?”

I smack her thigh and climb out of bed. “You better always think I’m sexy.” My eyes roam over her near naked body. “I want everything you’re offering, but I need to check on Rowe.”

“Understandable. But I want what I’m owed,” she frowns like she’s scary.

“Your punishment? Soon.”

I disappear into the bathroom then return, ready for the world. Everest still looks primed to be fucked, but I’ll return to her in a bit. I have to check on my son.

My phone buzzes.

Whit: Made up a reason for us to leave Rowe behind. The news just reported her suicide.

Me: Already going downstairs.

I find Rowe standing in the middle of the room, staring at the television with a half-eaten donut in his hand.

“She’s too evil to commit suicide.”

“We know that, but they don’t.”

He looks up at me with a trace of sadness in his eyes. “You did this?”

“Yeah, I promised her I would when she tried to kill me. Plus, she was never going to be the mother she should have been.”

“Why didn’t you tell me your plan?”

“Because I know you’re an adult, but your life has been severely robbed of innocence. I want you to live freely knowing I have your back, even if you didn’t ask. I may not always tell you the plan, but would never lie about the outcome or leave you in the dark.”

“I know she’s never really participated in my life, but it’s weird knowing she’s gone.”

“I know, but she just would have caused you more pain.”

He sniffs and I pull him into a hug. Her death doesn’t resolve anything between them, but it never would have.
