“That’senough!”Whityells at Anika as he pushes her back into her seat with enough force for her and the chair to crash to the ground.

He stands over her in the private room, staring down at her as he clinches his jaw. His body is tight and his fists are balled as his chest heaves from anger. That is the look of a fed up man. Part of his problems were mine, and I refuse to let my little brother continue to fight my battles. Most of her rage seemed to be focused on Everie, and my first instinct was to protect her.

Now that we’re past her outburst, I release Everie as Anika gets up. She knows not to move much because her ex-husband looks ready to knock her out if she attempts to raise her voice, but Everie steps back where she was to watch it all, like a movie.

Seeing her icy stare brought enough back to know I’ve never liked her. Besides, according to Whit, all of this happened because of her fixation on me. That’s what it needs to be. We paid for the guard to wait outside.

“Whit, can you take Everest for some fresh air? I’ll catch up.”

He studies me for a second, then acquiesces. I wait until we’re alone to turn my attention back to the pain in my ass. I don’t have a clear memory to confirm she had anything to do with my attack, but she’s done enough to be on my bad side. Going after Everest didn’t help either, nor did I like the way my skin prickled when she attacked. There are things still out of my control, but this doesn’t have to be one of them.

She studies me like she wants me to fuck her on the table, but wants me to care that she’s mad. I put my elbows on the table and lean in as I hold her stare.

“You wanted my attention, now you have it.” She grins like I offered marriage. “Be careful. You may find that it isn’t what you want.”

“I remained a wife to your brother to show you how good I could be for you.”

I rub my face as I chuckle. “You were a terrible wife and an even worse mother. Even if you were decent, we would have never happened. I’ll never forgive you for trying to kill my brother.” I don’t yell; I don’t need to. “I didn’t want you before and I don’t want you now.”

“Fuck you. You should be dead. You’re supposed to be dead.”

“I’m not and you should know that when I go home and fuck my girlfriend, you won’t be a thought for either of us.”

Her eyes flash with anger, but the bitter part of her kicks in when she gets in my face. “This was pointless. I should have aborted that little bastar…”

She doesn’t finish her sentence because I grab her by the neck and slam her onto the table. Anika grabs at my hand, scratching me, trying to get me to let go. The cuffs on her wrists make it hard for her to fight back. I squeeze harder, making her gasp.

“I’m not Whit,” I warn her through gritted teeth. I lift her and slam her down, feeling satisfied by the way she flinches when she hits her head on the table. “I don’t have his patience or understanding. I love my son, but I don’t give a damn if he has to cry at your funeral.” I watch her change colors as she loses air. “You better pray I don’t remember what happened to me because if I find out that you had anything to do with it, the bars won’t help you.”

Releasing her, I push her off the table. She grunts in pain before she starts sucking in air.

“You almost broke my wrist!” She cries like I give a fuck about her tears, real or fake.

I walk around the table so she can see how serious I am. She rolls onto her back and looks up at me like she wants to fight.

“If I have to come see you again, a broken bone will be the least of your worries.”

Everest still looks a little dazed when I join them in the SUV. Whit is still seething from facing the person he hates the most, but he’s hiding it well. I want him to know he doesn’t have to be concerned with her. All he needs to do is to be a good man to Moonlight and love our son the way he always has.

“Whit.” He looks at me since I pulled him from the internal rant in his head. He’s never had issues speaking his mind or standing up from himself, but his impulse control has always been higher than mine. “I have it from here.”

The crease in his eyebrows relaxes a little because he knows what I mean. Now that I’m back, I’ll do my best to lighten my family’s burdens, even if that means getting my hands bloody.

I grab Everie’s hand and squeeze it. She smiles at me but studies me like my appearance has somehow changed in the last hour.

“Are you okay?” She nods quickly and looks out of the window. “You know I’d never let her hurt you, right?”

“More than you know.” Her certainty is comforting, but there is an edge in her voice that I can’t quite place.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

Everie leans in and cups my cheek before giving me a sweet, soft kiss.

“Yes. I’m fine. We’ll talk later, okay?”

“We better,” I tell her. She’s stuck between laughing and rolling her eyes, but giggles when I squeeze her thigh. I turn back to my brother. “I take it the detective on my case doesn’t know anymore than what you and Rowe told me, right?”
