Sparrow nudges Rowe to shut up as I rub my face.

“It wasn’t like that. Some memories come back like reflexes. I wasn’t putting Moonie’s needs above anyone else’s. That’s Whit’s fucking job.”

I can hear Whit laughing as I walk away to follow the Spanish-speaking tornado.

“Please don’t call me Moonie when you get up there,” Moonlight says in the high-pitched voice she uses when she’s uncomfortable.

It makes me pause and turn around since I didn’t realize I did that... “That was at least a normal nickname, right?”

She nods as she sips her water. “Yes, but I wouldn’t use any at all. Trust me.”

“Everie,” I call from the bottom of the stairs.

“EVEREST!” Her correction causes some titters from the kitchen.

With a deep sigh, I place my foot on the bottom step, but pause when someone bangs on the front door.

I swing it open to see what in the hell is going on. One of Rowe’s friends rushes in looking disheveled, with a healing bruise on his left cheek. I close the door but get in his face to check for damage like I would if it were Rowe. At around eighteen, he’s still a child to me.

“Sorry, it’s the only place I thought to come.”

“What happened to you?”

Rowe and Whit come around the corner as I’m asking. “Jones?” Rowe starts.

“What happened?” They ask in unison.

“Our amnesty is up. The kill order went out the moment we turned 18.”

“Kill order? Who’s We?”

“So, your dad really is Mafia?” Rowe questions, slowly.

Jones flinches. “Stepdad. Yeah, and he hates us.”

“Who’s us?” I ask again.

“My twin. I have to get to him before it’s too late.”

Rowe and Whit tend to him as I pull out my phone to call the only person I know with this kind of power.

“Hey, I was going to stop by and check on you after lunch,” Tucker tells me.

“If you could come now, that’d be great. Looks like we’re in need of your other services.”

His already serious tone takes on a different type of brevity. “I’m on the way. I just need to know… hold on, Everie is calling.” As I look up the stairs, I wait for him to come back to the line. “Walt, is it related to why Everie wants to leave?”

“What?” I say a little too loudly. “No.”

“I’m almost there.”

He hangs up, and I turn to look at the guys. “Tucker is on the way. Hang tight. I’ll be back.”

If Everie thinks she can leave me that easily, we’re about to have a problem. I jog up the stairs, only to find that my room is empty. I check the other rooms in the wing because surely, she’s not where I think she is hiding. After also not finding any sign of Coco, I go back inside my room and move to the door that was between us when we first arrived.

“Everie?” I try the door and it’s locked. Sighing, I knock. “Open the door, please.” Silence greets me. I drop my head on the cool surface. “I’m not picking Moonlight over you in any capacity. We’ve talked about this.”

Her room is still quiet, but I hear the doorbell. “Listen, I’m not ignoring your feelings, but there is a situation that needs my immediate attention.” I move from the door and look back at it. “I can’t believe you called Tucker. You can be as mad as you want but leaving isn’t an option.”
