Chapter Two

Austin

“Sowherehaveyoubeen since… high school,” Felix asks. I can already tell he’s hoping this ends well. I’m not so optimistic. There’s too much history and heart break to bounce back in one night. But even I can’t ignore how amazing she looks, how perfect her scent is mixing with ours.

“New York City,” she admits reluctantly. “I own an art center out there.”

“How the hell did that come about? New York?” Felix gasps as he leaned in closer to listen, hanging on every word out of her mouth.

“Be a little more obvious,” I hiss at him. She narrows her eyes but answers his question anyway. He can pretend having her here erases everything. But she didn’t have to live through seeing Monroe fucking break. How were we supposed to help an alpha recover when we were hurting just as much? If she actually cared about us she wouldn’t have left like that.

“A few years of working three jobs and finally partnering with another art teacher. We opened it together and when she died last year it all went to me,” she explains. “A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into building that place up.”

“That’s amazing, Dakota, I’m happy for you,” Felix says. His voice breaks a bit and I can read him easily enough to know that’s him giving up. It’s hard to accept knowing she has a whole life states away.

“Why did you leave like that?” I accuse. Her anger flares and she shakes her head bitterly.

“I should have known better than to fucking come back here,” she growls as she swallows down the rest of her drink. She’s going to get sick sucking down drinks and shots this fast.

“We deserve an answer,” Felix says quietly. That gives her pause and she glances out at the dance floor. Maybe talking about it is too hard if she faces us?

“Monroe and Georgia,” she says quietly. My eyebrows furrow. How the fuck does her sister fit into this? “She showed me the pictures of them together the night of Dylan’s big graduation party. Then she listed every detail, down to you two keeping watch for him.”

“What?” Monroe’s voice cuts in and her head jerks back in our direction, locking onto the alpha who’d tracked us down in this busy club. “That’s impossible.”

“I saw them,” she hisses. Tears build in her eyes and threaten to spill over. The pure conviction in her face has my own anger melting completely. “She said as soon as I left you swept in. Admitted to her that you really wanted her.”

“Bullshit.” Monroe barks out a laugh at that. “You knew I couldn’t stand her or your family.”

“We left Dylan’s party to drive my brother home,” I argue. “He punked out an hour in and was puking in the bushes. Took me a week to clean out my backseat from that stench.”

“We left minutes after you,” Felix agrees. “Whatever she told you was a lie.”

“No,” she argues, shaking her head. “I stuck by your asses. Because I didn’t believe her at first. But then she showed me the pictures.”

“I want to see these fucking pictures,” Monroe demands. She glares up at him with that fire I’d missed. Felix apparently isn’t the only one already captivated again, I’d just let my anger hold me back until now.

“Like I kept them to glare at after all these years,” she scoffs. “Once was enough, thanks.” The sarcasm has him growling.

“You can’t hold fake shit against us. How do I defend myself if you’re too damn stubborn to listen?!” he counters with just as much fire. These two have never been afraid to go head to head.

“I don’t need this shit. First my mom and now you,” she says in a tired voice. In a quick move she’s gone, fleeing from the club.

“She really believes it,” Felix says. The pain in his voice echoes what I feel but Monroe is angry.

“No. She doesn’t have to fucking stay if she doesn’t want us, but this is bullshit,” he yells as he turns and follows her. We get all the way to the sidewalk before we spot her again. She’s practically running and we take off after her. It might look a bit suspicious but we aren’t letting her go again.

“Dakota. Stop!” Monroe thunders. She stops at the corner and turns to us.

“Go fuck yourself, Monroe. Or better yet go fuck my sister,” she says with so much poison I wince.

“Your sister is a fucking liar. Why would you believe her over us?” I yell back. It’s the first time I’ve ever raised my voice at an omega and she stops in surprise.

“Fine,” she says with an annoyed sigh and pulls her phone out. “You want to see them?” After a few minutes I start to grow impatient, but she’s going back years to find whatever failed evidence she has.

“I thought you didn’t have it?” Roe snarks. Felix smacks him in the arm and glares.

“Not fucking helping,” he bites out. Roe clamps his jaw shut but doesn’t defend himself.
