CHAPTER6

Annabella

My father would be livid if he knew I was using my own vehicle to transport Colton to the airport. But tonight’s dinner was technically at my father’s request, and I didn’t want Colton sitting in the back of the limo while I drove. What kind of a date would that be?

What Dad doesn’t know, won’t hurt me.

Normally, when it came to the business, I never would have kept a secret, or broken company policy, like dating a client. I was what dad called, ‘the rule follower’. Something about Colton had me stepping outside of that box. I knew I should feel guilty, but there wasn’t even the slightest twinge. The only emotion in me was one of excitement to see him again. I had enjoyed his company last night, and even though this couldn’t last, because long distance relationships suck, it didn’t mean I was going to decline his offer. There was something mysterious about him, and I wanted to know.Or maybe it’s just that sexy accent of his. I could listen to him talk for hours while staring into those gorgeous dark eyes of his.

I pulled up the driveway and parked in front of the house. Then I sent him a text message.

I’M HERE.

Colton was expecting me and being prompt was my job. But he didn’t come out. Instead, the front door opened, and a young girl came running over to my car. “Uncle Colton is on the phone with Uncle Logan. Mom said you should come inside and have some sweet tea while you wait.”

I wish this invitation had come from Colton instead, but how could I refuse without sounding rude? Turning off the engine, I got out of the Mustang and followed her inside.

“Hello, I’m Rhonda Lane,” said the woman I’d seen yesterday, meeting me at the door

I almost blushed as I recalled the instant jealousy that had plagued me when I saw her hugging Colton. Since I knew who she was now, I was at ease. “I’m Annabella Montgomery.”

“My brother said he’d only be a few minutes. Why don’t I grab us something cold to drink and we can wait for him out back?” she offered.

I nodded, waiting in the hall while she went to the kitchen. The young girl had followed me, and I felt a surge of questions bubbling up from her. “Are you Uncle Colton’s girlfriend?”

“No. I’m his chauffeur.”

“What’s that?” she asked.

“I’m a limo driver. I give people rides. Have you ever been in a limo?” Just seeing where she lived, it wouldn’t surprise me if she had. It would actually shock me more if she hadn’t.

“Yes. Sometimes my uncles come and visit and they use a limo. But you aren’t driving a limo. That’s a car,” she said.

“It is. Today I decided to drive something different.”

“So you’re not a chauffeur today?” she asked.

“I…I guess not,” I replied. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Lindsay Lane. I live here with my mom and dad and three bratty brothers.”

“Lindsay, why don’t you go to your room?” Rhonda interrupted. “Finish that book you were supposed to read last night. Even though we have company, you still have to do your homework,” she said, handing me a glass of sweet tea.

Lindsay shrugged and said, “I guess we can’t talk anymore. But maybe you can come over again when Uncle Colton returns next weekend.”

“We’ll see,” I said.

“Can you bring your limo if you do come back?” she asked.

“I don’t drive it all the time,” I replied. And I had no idea that Colton planned on returning. Of course, we hadn’t spoken yet today, but I would’ve known if he’d scheduled something with the company.

Lindsay didn’t seem to have a problem with my response, and dashed off to do her reading. When I was her age, I had to be reminded a lot more than once. I hated reading. Now, I can’t wait for time to sit down with a good book. Which I’d be doing right now if I wasn’t here waiting for Colton.

“Where are you two going?” he asked as he entered the room.

“I just asked Annabella to join me for some sweet tea. Do you want some?” Rhonda asked.

“You know I have a plane to catch, right?” he reminded her.
