“They are Holsteins, just like we have back home. Beautiful creatures,” he said.

Smelly creatures.

This place seemed to relax him, so I decided to try a joke.

“Please don’t ask them if you can milk them,” I teased.

In a serious tone, he said, “They only get milked two or three times a day. They know their schedule and will all come to the barn and line up when it’s time to feed and milk.”

“I was joking, Colton.”

He looked at me and said, “Sorry. Of course. We’re not here for cows. We’re here for ice cream.”

He extended his hand to me and I placed my hand in his.

“Ready for some toasted coconut?” he asked.

“I really don’t mind staying a little longer if you want to watch the cows,” I said. It wasn’t what I’d have planned for a date, but it was growing on me.

“I can see them anytime I want. We only have a short time before I have to leave,” he said.

We walked to the shop, hand in hand. Unfortunately, they didn’t have his favorite flavor, but he seemed to enjoy the Maine blueberry just as much. After we were through, we went for another walk around the farm. This time, not towards the cows, but on the outskirts. I loved being out of the city - it was so peaceful here. If it wasn’t for the smell, it would be perfect.

On our walk, we came upon a downed tree, where we decided to sit and chat a little more. “Do you come and visit your sister often?” I asked.

“This is my first time,” he said.

“Oh, does she normally go visit you?”

“Maybe I should explain. Rhonda and I only met for the first time when you dropped me off at her home yesterday. I was adopted and never knew I had a sister until very recently.”

“I never would’ve guessed. You two seem so comfortable together,” I said. If I had just met a long-lost sibling, I would be a wreck, never mind out on a date with another person I barely knew. “If you would rather have been with them, getting to know her better, you could’ve canceled. I wouldn’t have been offended.”

“Do I look like I want to be somewhere other than here?” he asked. I shook my head. “Then don’t worry about it. I didn’t tell you that to make you feel guilty. And besides, I’ll be back here next weekend. Hopefully seeing them, and you too, if you’d like to go out with me again.”

There was no doubt that I wanted to see him, but I knew I had a busy weekend coming up. “I do want to see you, but this is our busiest time of the year. We have proms and weddings every weekend.”

“I understand. Is Friday night just as busy for you?” he asked.

He was making an effort, and I had to as well. “Thursday through Sunday is very tough to get a night off. But I am free late night. Not sure how you feel about that,” I said, trying to stay hopeful.

“That diner was pretty good last night,” he smiled.

“I guess it’s a date,” I said.

He leaned over and kissed me so briefly that I never got the chance to kiss him back before our lips parted.

“Not that I want this to end, but I have a plane to catch,” he said.

I got up off the tree trunk and said, “Then we’d better get going, or for the first time ever, I’ll be late.”

As we headed back to the car he said, “I don’t know who they are going to send to pick me up at the airport next weekend, but I hope it’s you.”

I already knew it wasn’t. It was going to be my dad. Things could change, so I wasn’t going to send him off disappointed.

“You never know. Guess you’ll find out Saturday,” I said. And I’ll cross my fingers Dad wants to switch with me.
