I wasn’t sure this topic was going to go any better. “We are having brunch with Annabella’s parents tomorrow,” I said.

“Is this the first time you meet them?” Rhonda asked.

I nodded.

“Are you nervous?”

“Not really,” I said.

Rhonda made a face and asked, “Why not?”

“Because Annabella told me all about them and they sound like good people. Is there a reason I should be worried?”

“You were nervous meeting me. I’m just puzzled why you’re not nervous to meet them,” she said.

“It’s different. Our meeting wasn’t just a simple brunch. It was opening doors about my entire family history. I don’t think our conversation tomorrow will be quite so intense,” I said.

I sure as hell hope it won’t be.

“You could be meeting your future in-laws,” Rhonda said. “Hope you brought something better to wear than a t-shirt and jeans.”

Phil said, “Welcome to having a sister. I have four of them. Homeland Security could use people like them. They just look at me and I feel like they’ve uncovered all my secrets.”

“What secrets do you have?” Rhonda asked, crossing her arms.

Phil laughed. “See what I mean?”

“Don’t scare him away. He might not want a sister if you tell him things like that,” Rhonda said.

Annabella chuckled. “It’s too late. He’s already got one.”

A sister I never knew about and a girlfriend I never knew I wanted. I am outnumbered.

The rest of the day at Rhonda’s went very smoothly. The kids came home and were so busy talking about their day that no one asked me any questions. It was nice not being put on the spot.

When it was time to leave, Lindsay came over and sat on my lap. She looked up at me and said, “Did Mommy tell you that it’s our birthday next week?”

“No, she didn’t. Is there something special you want for your birthday?” I asked. She nodded. “What is it?”

“For you to come back and be here for my party. Can you come next weekend, Uncle Colton?” she asked.

“Lindsay, he can’t fly here all the time,” Rhonda said.

She continued to look at me then asked, “Can you move here then, so we can see you more? I bet Annabella would like that too, wouldn’t you?”

Annabella replied, “It is nice seeing Colton, but he works. And I work too, so even if he was here, I couldn’t see him all the time.”

“Then he could be here with us when you’re working, and when I’m in school, he can go and be with you,” she said.

I said, “It’s not that easy.”

“It is. You’ll see.”

Rhonda walked over and said, “Lindsay, Uncle Colton has a family back home that he can’t leave. But he will come back and visit us as often as he can, isn’t that right?” I nodded and she added, “And if he can come to your party, I’m sure he’ll be here.”

“I promise to do my best,” I said honestly.

Lindsay hugged me and said, “Thank you, Uncle Colton. I know I have a lot of uncles, but I love you just as much as I love them. Please come to my party.” She got off my lap and left the room with her mom.
