“As I see it, you can give up, or risk it all for the greatest love story you might ever experience.”

“Or end up brokenhearted,” I sighed.

“I think you already are, so from where I’m sitting, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

“Are you sure you’re a detective? Because you sound more like a relationship coach”

He laughed. “Colton would fall on the floor if he ever heard that. I can’t even remember the last time I only dated one woman at a time, never mind be serious.”

“Hmm. Maybe I should reconsider taking your advice then,” I replied.

“Oh, I give great advice. I just don’t follow it,” he said.

I wonder what advice you’re giving Colton. Hopefully better than what you gave me.

With any luck, I’d get the opportunity to ask Colton myself someday.

Dinner conversation thankfully was not about Colton or me. We chatted about TV shows and dream vacations. After I dropped Jack off at the airport and went home, I found myself less stressed than I had been earlier. I showered and crawled into bed. This time when I snuggled my face into the pillow, the lingering scent of Colton’s cologne wasn’t a bitter memory. Instead I inhaled, closed my eyes, and let myself enjoy the sweet memories.

I’ll wait for you, Colton. Not because Jack said I should, but because I don’t know how I’m going to be able to smile again without you.

Pulling the sheets up around me I rolled onto my side.

Goodnight, Colton. Wherever you are, I hope you know that I love you.
