“Why? He won’t answer you?”

She shook her head. “He won’t even speak to me.”

“Why the hell not? I’ve done as he asked. I stayed away from you,” I replied.

“I know you did. But that’s not what I wanted. I…I went to see him several days ago.”

“About what?” I asked, almost afraid to hear.

“I wanted him to know that…that I love you and that I want you to be a part of my life. That I wasn’t going to let him stand in the way of my happiness.”

You love me.

I wanted to pull her into my arms, tell her that I loved her too, but I needed to hear what else happened. “What did he say?”

A tear rolled down her cheek and she said, “He gave me the freedom to do as I please. He fired me and told me I was no longer welcome there.”

Wow, Greg, seriously? Fuck that guy!

I pulled her into my lap as she sobbed onto my shoulder. Stroking her hair, I said, “I’m here baby, I’m here.”

“Please…don’t…leave…me again,” she cried.

“I promise, Annabella. A man can’t live without a heart, and you hold mine. I love you, my Bella.”

She looked up at me, tears still running down her cheeks and said, “I love you too, Colton.”

There was no passionate kiss. No tender embrace. Instead we clung to each other as she wept, and I was glad I finally could be here for her.

Sorry it took me so long, but you’ll never have to face anything like that alone, ever again.
