Part of me was angry hearing those words again. I needed an explanation. Since my mother wasn’t here to give one, I needed to hear it from Rhonda.

“You’ve said that twice. I need to know what the hell it means,” I said firmly. “Why me and not you?”

Rhonda looked up at me, shocked. “Because you’re a man and I’m…not.”

“You’re not making any sense, Rhonda.”

“I know, but I can’t tell you any more than that right now. It’s bigger than just you and me. It affects so many people, and I’ve promised not to talk about it with anyone.”

“Rhonda, this is my life we’re talking about. Don’t I have the right to know?”Because I sure think I do.

“Colton, I…I…” She got up and paced the room, then turned back to me and said, “I think we should go and see Logan.”

Logan again. I had no idea who the hell this guy was, but if he had answers, I was game. I got up and said, “If he’s the one I need to talk to in order to get answers, then lead

the way.”

“He’s one of them. But there’s something else you need to know about him,”: she said.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“He’s…our brother.”

Brother?Richard hadn’t mentioned a brother. “You’re serious?”

“I don’t have a reason to lie about such a thing,” she said.

“Is he younger than me?” I asked.

She shrugged. “I don’t know how old you are, but he’s forty-five.”

“I’m forty-four,” I said.

She looked puzzled. “You can’t be. I’m forty-four,” she said.

“My birthday is next week,” I said.

Rhonda’s eyes filled with tears. “So is mine.”

“We’re…twins,” I said, shocked. Maybe that’s why I’d always felt as though something was missing. It was Rhonda. This revelation only made me want to learn whatever Logan had to say even more. Why would mother keep Rhonda and not me?

Before I could stop her, Rhonda wrapped her arms around me again, hugging me even tighter than before. When she let go, she said, “I should text Logan and see if he’s free to meet us.”

I waited while she sent him a message. Her expression told me all I needed to know.

“He can’t come tonight.”

“Did you tell him why we wanted to meet with him?” I asked.

“No. He’s going into surgery and won’t be out for hours. He did say that he’ll meet up with us tomorrow.”

“Surgery? Is he ill?” I asked.

“No. He’s a neurosurgeon and sometimes emergencies come up.”

“Why wasn’t he here when I met you?” I asked.

She said, “Because I haven’t told him about you yet.”
