CHAPTER 28

And knock 'em deadI did.

The four weeks after the bombing at my campaign office were packed completely full. First, we moved offices and made sure that all volunteers and employees knew about our heightened security protocols. The new office was only accessible via keycardandwas fifteen floors up in one of the business buildings in downtown Sacramento.

From there, I made it my number one goal to show the Alphas First movement that I was not going to be cowed by their antics. During the day, I was on any and all talk shows that would have me, recording interviews and making it plain as day that California needed a change, and I would be the one to do it.

At night I, along with my pack, moved through the circles of California’s wealthiest, trying to garner campaign donations and spread our influence. Madeline was particularly good at making everyone around her feel at ease, and she smoothed even the most prickly of feathers with just a smile or a compliment.

All in all, as we headed into the middle of May,I was ahead in the polls. Actually, I was a head and shoulder above the rest of the candidates in my party. The people of California were ready for a change, and I was ready to bring it to them.

“Well, Mrs. Worthington, I am so glad that you were able to come out and join us.” I said to the omega standing in front of me. The Worthingtons were famously picky about who they donated to, and normally I wouldn’t have dreamt of even being in the same room as Cecelia Worthington as a first-time candidate, but I had lucked out.

It turned out that Eloise Taylor was Cecelia Worthington’s granddaughter, though she hardly ever mentioned it.

Eloise and the rest of her pack were also in attendance tonight, and I watched as Madeline stood in their protective circle, laughing at whatever her brother had just said.

Cecelia followed my line of sight before she gave me a knowing smile. “Your Madeline is a joy. So, if she and Eloise say that you are a good man, I can’t help but be curious about you too.”

“There isn’t much to me, what you see is what you get.”

Cecelia snorted into her glass of champagne as she took a sip. “I hardly believe that. But what I do believe is that you will make some much needed changes in California. Including the academy system that has been plaguing this state for too long.”

I glanced over at her and saw that her blue eyes had gone far away. “Did you go through the academy system when you were younger? Is that where you met Atticus and his pack?”

“Yes, I went through the system, but I didn’t meet Atticus, Roald, and Simon there.” She smiled at whatever memory my question had just brought up. “Maybe I’ll tell you my story sometime...ifyou win your election of course. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe my granddaughter was about to face-time with the babysitter and I will positively die if I don’t get to see my Vivienne.” The elegant woman swept away from me, leaving me feeling more confused than before.

“So, does that mean that she’s going to help me?” I muttered to myself.

“That’s a pretty safe bet.” A voice coming from behind me said. “My mate enjoys being vague, but luckily for you I learned to speak her language a long time ago.”

Atticus Worthington watched his mate fondly as she waved at Eloise’s phone, probably cooing at baby Vivienne.

“Carter, you can count on Worthington Enterprises to help you with your campaign.” He held a hand out to me and I shook it firmly. “Don’t fuck it up.”

With that, he waved at another person in the ballroom and left me standing by myself as he went to speak to them.

The scent of sugared cherries filled my noise, and a hand slid into mine. “I take it everything went well?” Madeline asked, grinning up at me. She had been sick all week, so it was good to see color in her cheeks again.

“Incredibly well, better than I could have imagined.” I replied, pressing a kiss to the side of her head. She looked absolutely mouthwatering in the dusky blue dress that she was wearing, and I eyed one of her creamy thighs that was peeking through the slit in the dress as she shifted on her feet.

My mind drifted away from campaign donations and chatting with people at the party to how I wanted to pull Madeline’s skirts up and bury my fingers inside of her.

With my mind made up, I tugged a curious Madeline out of the ballroom and down the hallway to where the restroom was. It was an all gender restroom that was fancier than your average public restroom with gilded marble and gold faucets. It would also be perfect for what I had in mind.

“What are you up to, Adair?” Madeline asked as I pulled her inside and shut the door. The bathroom light fixtures had Edison bulbs in them rather than the usual fluorescents, so the bathroom was on the darker side as I pushed her up against the wall and slammed my mouth onto hers.

Adair’s mouth movedhungrily against mine, while I was still reeling from the fact that he’d pulled us into the bathroom at all.

“Here?” I asked, my voice muffled by his mouth. Adair slid a hand into the slit of my dress and his palm warmed my thighs.

“Yeah...is it too much for you?” Adair pulled away, his blue eyes searching mine.

I thought about it for a minute before blushing. I definitely liked the idea of potentially getting caught more than any normal person should have, and I squeezed my thighs together as heat ignited in my core.

“You like it, don’t you?” He asked, and I couldn’t help but nod, still feeling a bit embarrassed.

“What if someone hears us?” I nibbled on my lower lip.
