Page 9 of Always Hiding

“It’s okay, we’ll get you to a nice spot where you can rest.” If I hadn’t been watching the woman all night, I would have probably just thought that this situation was that of an exasperated boyfriend taking his drunk girlfriend home. The thought was terrifying to think about, especially since it seemed like everyone else was ignoring the pair while they waited for the bathrooms to open up.

I heard another mumbled no as the woman pressed a weak hand into the man’s chest, trying to push him away, and I felt my ability to reason snap inside of my head as I took three giant steps forward and gripped the man’s shoulder, feeling the flesh there pop satisfyingly under the pressure from my hand.

“I believe that the lady told you no.” Yanking him away from her, I sent the man stumbling away from us until he hit the wall with athunk, the guy turned around looking completely pissed off.

“Hey man, I don’t know who the fuck you think you are but that’s my girlf...” I watched the man’s expression change as he finally got a really good look at me. I was over a foot taller than him, and he was on the skinnier end of the spectrum. He couldn’t have been more than a hundred and fifty pounds soaking wet.

The man’s mouth shut, cutting off whatever he was going to say next, and he held his hands up in front of his chest. “Hey man, I was just trying to help her out....” He said before he finally realized that the situation was definitely not going to go well for him, he then tucked tail, and sprinted away from me, before disappearing into the dancing crowd.

I wanted to chase after him so that security could get a hold of him, but at that moment the woman’s legs gave out, and she would have crumpled to the floor if not for the arm that I had kept wrapped around her waist.

“Whoa there, honey,” I said as I held her up, and got my first really good look at her. She had a round face that was sweaty and devoid of any color, and I was sure that she also had a pair of pretty brown eyes, but I could barely see them behind the sleepy flutter of her eyelashes.

She mumbled something quietly, and I leaned in close to listen. “Can you say that again, honey? What’s your name?” I gently prodded, but she was too far gone, and her head lolled to the side.

With a frustrated growl, I slid my free hand behind her knees, and hefted her fully into my arms bridal style. The sweet scent of sugared cherry tarts filled my nose, and it was so familiar that I nearly dropped the woman in shock. This was the same exact scent that Rio had come home wearing this morning. Right down to its sweet-tart edge.

I stared down at the woman’s pale face, finally putting a face to the scent that had danced around my packmate for almost six months. Suddenly, I heard an audible gasp from in front of me. At some point, Rio and Marcus had found us, and now Rio was rushing towards us with a panicked look on his face.

“Holy shit,” I could barely hear his voice over the din of the music which seemed to get louder and louder with every song that played. “Madeline?”
