Backing away, I rotate on my heel, back to the elevator. The secretary calls me, but I ignore her. My mother’s fucking Dr. Rogue.

The elevator opens, and I go inside. After pressing the button for the parking garage, I pull out my phone to text Milton that I’m on my way back down. The doors suddenly open. I’m on the wrong floor. Lifting my head, I lose my breath at the person standing in front of me.

“Hello, sister,” Nicole says with a smirk, standing in an empty office floor. “Miss me?”

Reaching out, I press the button to close the doors, but they don’t move. I frown. What the fuck?

Nicole steps closer, and I jerk back, connecting with the elevator wall. “Stay the fuck away from me.”

My eyes go to my phone. My message to Milton didn’t send. There’s no signal. I swear I had a signal. “Don’t be dramatic. And you can relax—It’s just me.”

“What are you doing here?” My eyes search the room to see if she’s truly alone or not. I don’t see anyone, but I’m not fooled. Why would she be here alone? “Surely, you’re not here for a reunion with Gabriella.”

“God, no. I’m here for you.”

“How did you know I’d be here?” She’s changed since the last time I saw her. She’s thinner, eyes more sunken. She’s wearing all black; a vest with lace and a skirt with chains, and her legs are too thin for her knee-high boots. Her black hair is short, and she has more tattoos and piercings.

“Because we know everything.” I don’t miss “we.”Not that she hid it very well. “Blake’s not very happy with you.”

“Blake can go fuck himself. If you think for a minute you scare me, you’re wrong.”

“Then why are you shaking?” She laughs, and I wince. Has she always sounded like a witch? It goes right through me, igniting something deep and sinister inside. I could probably hurt her and feel nothing but happy about it. “You’ve always been an idiot, but I have to admit, you’ve really done it this time. Blake won’t forgive you for teaming up with Milton to get back at him.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about—”

“Please.” She rolls her eyes. She’s bored. “We know he’s back from the dead and all. He wants his revenge on Blake for sending him to the Hill, right? I just wasn’t aware you two were that close. Is he a father replacement or something?” I pull a face and her eyebrow arches. “Oh, I see how it is. He’s yourdaddy, huh?”

“Shut up,” I snap at her, wanting to hurtle across the room and strangle her. “Milton’s—”

“In the garage, I know, so we don’t have long. He was always so good at coming to your rescue.” She folds her arms, and I don’t miss the glint of a wedding band on her finger. “Oh, Nick and I got hitched finally. You missed one hell of a wedding.”

“Just get on with it!” I snap, and her nostrils flare that I didn’t acknowledge her fucked-up marriage.

“Come home to your family, Heidi.”

“You’renotmy family. What the fuck do you want? Why are you really here?”

She sighs again. “I told Blake not to give you the benefit of the doubt—but here we are. He wants to send you a warning. Come home with me, and he won’t kill Milton. In fact, he’ll even forget all of it, including getting thrown into a psych ward for attempting to kill yourself.”

“Where is he?”

“Like I’m going to tell you so you can raise the alarm and send in your knight in shining armor to kill us all. We all know it’s the reason why you’re really here. To save you the energy, Gabriella doesn’t know shit about our new location.”

“Why bother with the warning? Why not just get me now? You practically have me cornered.”

“That’s too easy.” She shrugs. “You know Blake. He loves to play—especiallywith you. And as I said, he wanted to even the playing field by giving you a chance.”

My eyes narrow on her. She makes me want to vomit. “I’m not playing. And I’m not going with you.”

“He knew you’d say that, so game on. He told me to tell you to run. Run as fast as you can because it’ll make catching you all the sweeter.” Turning on her heel, she starts walking away. “Good luck, baby sister. You’re going to need it.”

Reaching out, I press the button again. The doors finally slide shut, like maybe they were rigged. Letting out a ragged breath, nothing eases the clenching in my chest.

When I get down to the garage, Milton’s right where I left him. “I was about to see what was taking so long—” Walking to him, I wrap my arms around his waist and smother my face into his chest. His smell and warmth really do calm me. And Blake wants to take that away from me. “Heidi?” I shake my head, not knowing what to say or do. He pulls me back and frowns at me, taking hold of my upper arms. “What is it? You’re shaking—”

“Can we go? I don’t want to be here anymore.”

“What happened?”
