Cale sidled up next to me. “Uh-oh, Rust. Do you think he knows?”

“Looks like it,” I said, gritting my teeth.

“YOU’RE FUCKING MY DAUGHTER?!”Johnny screamed.

Killer was already in a terrible mood, but this was the last straw for him. “Would somebodypleaseget the fucking lunatic out of here?” he yelled, his voice booming through the rafters.

A third security guard rushed over and joined the effort. The three guards dragged Johnny off as he screamed my name.

“Fuck.” I stepped up to Killer to explain. “Coach, that’s my best friend.”

“And you fucked his daughter? Sounds like he’s not your best friend anymore. Isthatwhy your game was trash today?”

I nodded. “I gotta take care of this, Killer.”

“Hurry up and make it right,” he said. “I need you to focus on Game 2.”

I whistled and got the attention of the event staff.

“Do me a favor. Don’t throw that guy out,” I said to the bewildered guard. “He’s with me. Take him up to the family room and tell him I’ll be up there in a minute.”

Back in the locker room, I didn’t bother jumping in the shower. I didn’t want to keep Johnny waiting any longer. I tore off my gear, hung a towel around my neck, and made my way up to the family room in my compression gitch, still dripping with sweat.

I walked in and found Johnny waiting for me, a Bud Light in hand.

“Ahhhh. There he is!” Johnny said, raising his bottle to me. “Rust Walker. My very best friend in the whole wide world.” Needless to say, he slathered heaps of sarcasm on those words.

I took a deep breath. “I’m sorry, Johnny.” I didn’t know what else to say.

“You’re sorry?Sorry? You’ve been fucking my daughter all this time and all you can say issorry?”

“I was going to tell you …”

He stood abruptly, his chair shooting out behind him. He neared and got in my face, our chests meeting as he stared up at me.

“You can punch me if you want,” I said. “Hell, I deserve it.”

His eyes narrowed, and his fists balled. But just as I braced for impact, he shook his head.

“Nah,” he said, and walked away to cool off. “I think I’d rather hurt you in other ways.”

What’s that mean?I wondered, but I didn’t ask him to clarify.

He’d resisted the urge to deck me, but he was still fuming mad. He spun around on his heels and pointed an accusatory finger at me.

“I asked you to keep an eyeon her, Rust, not to put yourcockin her. How could you even look me in the eye and pretend to be my best friend while you were screwing my daughter?”

“I hated keeping this a secret from you, Johnny. It’s the worst thing I’ve ever done.”

“Bullshit. If you really felt that way, you would’ve stayed away from her,” he countered.

“I swear, I tried. It wasn’t easy.”

“I knew it, too. Iknewit! Months ago, during the game you got scratched, I saw you standing close to her in the club box. I had a funny feeling. You were flirting with her then, weren’t you? I could tell. I couldseeit!”

I hung my head guiltily. I didn’t try to deny it.
