“Yeah, what’s there to be embarrassed about?” Farrah asked. “The fact that you work hard for an amazing butt? Or the fact that you make tons of money? Because you’rekillingit with your content, and if anyone has a problem with that, they can go shove it right up their freakin’ ass.”

“Thanks, Farrah,” I said and smiled. “Cody always griped about filming me. He felt like people were staring at us, and—”

“Ugh.Cody,” Farrah groused, rolling her eyes. She was never Cody’s biggest fan. But after he dumped me last week, she outright loathed him. Just the way she pronounced his name, dripping with disgust, made that clear. “What a shocker.Codywas too insecure to have a hot girlfriend.”

April, on the other hand, didn’t mind Cody. Until last week, anyway. Now she wore a similar expression as Farrah when his name came up. “I can’tbelievehe dumped you on your birthday,” she said. “What a goon! Who does that?”

“I’ll tell you who,” Farrah answered. “Cody. That’s who.”

April unlocked her car and the three of us got in. Farrah grabbed the back seat, and I took the front.

“You’re feeling a little down today, aren’t you?” April asked as she started the engine.

“Huh?” I shot her a side-eyed look. I thought I’d been doing pretty well hiding it.

“It’s okay, hun. Trust me, it gets better in time.” She patted my leg. “A few months from now, you won’t think about Cody at all.”

Wait, Cody? She thought I was upset aboutCody?

Sure, I was upset when Cody dumped me. But mostly because it was my birthday and he made an embarrassing scene. Once I got out of that restaurant, I gotta say, I felt like I’d taken a breath of fresh air.

Truth was, it wasn’t Cody I was bummed about.

Nope. It was somebody else.

“I’m not upset about Cody at all,” I said with a snicker.

“No?”

“Not even a bit. Honestly, I didn’t realize it until that night of my birthday, but really, it’d been over between us for months,” I said. “I felt like I was constantly walking on eggshells around him, because if I did or said the wrong thing—which was always—he’d get all mopey and silent. I wasn’t having any fun at all.”

“And you dated this guy for howlong?” Farrah asked.

“Nine months.”

“That iswaytoo long,” she tutted.

“I can’t imagine being dumped by a guy because I made too much money,” April said, pantomiming her mind being blown. “Just incredible.”

“And the craziest part is,he’sthe one who talked me into starting an OnlyFans,” I said. “See,Ithought I was making money for our future together. Ha! Silly me.”

April put the car in gear and started to drive. “So if it’s not Cody, who are you upset about?”

“Nobody,” I lied.

I hadn’t told them about my birthday run-in with Rust, because I didn’t want to get my hopes up and I didn’t want to jinx it, either. Plus, I knew how my friends would react if I told them I was talking to a guy thesamenight my boyfriend dumped me.

An older guy, at that.

Amucholder guy.

They’d be suspicious. They’d think I was rushing into something colossally dumb. And who could blame them?

But all week long, I’d been thinking about Rust. Every time a message pinged my phone, I had this little bubble of excitement bursting in my heart, and I hoped to see a text from Rust waiting for me. Of course, he hadn’t texted me, and I started to wonder if maybe I reallyhadimagined our moment alone. Maybe we hadn’t vibed at all? Maybe I was still just a dumb, young kid to him? And maybe it was all for the best. Because deep down, I knew I had no business fooling around with Dad’s best friend. It’dcrushhim if he ever found out.

“Oops. I forgot to give you your phone back.” Farrah stuck her hand between the two front seats, offering me my phone. “By the way, who’s Rust?”

“What’d you do?!” I asked, instantly fearing the worst. Quickly, I snatched my phone out of her hands. “You didn’t text him, did you?”
