“It’s settled then. I will go and pack my bag.” I look to Momma, who looks as though she could break down in tears.

I give her a sad smile and snag her hand and drag her to my room with me.

I pull out my suitcase from my closet and start throwing my essential clothes and toiletries in.

Momma is deadly silent. When I glance over at her, her eyes are filled with tears.

“Momma, I have to do what’s best for me and my baby.”

“We’re your family. We’re what’s best for you.” She sniffles, trying to hold back the tears.

“Momma, you’ve seen the stress that Nic is causing me. Alessandro will keep me safe. Hopefully once Sergio is on the mend, Papa will allow him to work under Alessandro’s command. He’s always been good to me. I’d like to take a little bit of Boston with me.”

Momma leans into me and pulls me in for a tight hug.

“Me and your papa love you, cara, never forget that. Even your big oaf of a brother does. He’s just too stubborn to admit when he’s wrong.” She runs her hand down my hair.

“I know, Momma,” and I let the tears fall with her.

I’m sad to be leaving my home, but I know it’s what’s best for me and my baby.

Once packed, one of the guards carries my suitcase to Alessandro and Rafael’s rental.

Papa steps up and pulls me into a hug. It’s not common in our world to show affection. But everyone knows my papa is deadly, he doesn’t need to prove anything. He has never been one to deny me, Momma, or Mia public affection.

“I will miss you, my sweet girl. Behave yourself, listen to Alessandro, and keep us posted on our grandchild.” He places a kiss to my hair and steps back.

He pulls my momma into his side, who is freely letting the tears fall now.

Just as we are about to step out of the door, Nic comes out of the guard’s office that is right by the front door. Before I can react, he pulls me into a tight embrace. I’m slightly shocked, but I allow him the closeness. Nic has never been one for affection, not even in private.

“I’m sorry for letting you down,” he whispers in my ear. “I love you dearly, you know that, right?” He pulls back so he can look down at me.

With tears filling my eyes, I nod up at him.

“Good.” He places a kiss to my forehead then starts to loosen his hold on me.

I lean up and press a kiss to his cheek. “I love you too, big brother.” I whisper so only he can hear.

He fully releases me and nods for me to carry on as I was.

I wipe the back of my hand over my cheeks, tasting my salty tears on my lips.

Al opens the back door of the car for me to get in. I expect him to climb up front with his father. Instead, he walks around the car and joins me in the back seat. I offer a small wave at my family as I leave my childhood home. Placing my head on the window, I allow my tears to fall freely.

I jump when I feel a hand on my lap. Al takes hold of my right hand and squeezes it gently. Giving me a sad smile as he watches my heart break at leaving my family behind.
