CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

CARMELLA

We end up staying at Bea and Leo’s one more night, but I know we need to go home. Even if Andrea isn’t in a routine yet, he can definitely sense something is up. I just think having him in his own home will help settle him.

I haven’t mentioned it to Al yet, but I plan to when he comes home later.

Bea and I spend most of our day in the snug, curled up on the couch whilst feeding Andrea and Sofia.

Bea’s Labrador puppy is currently curled up on my feet.

Ilaria pops her head around the door after knocking softly. Hunter jumps off the couch and barks at her entrance.

“Hunter, shh, puppy. You’ll wake the babies,” Bea coos as she scoops him into her arms.

It’s quite sweet, actually. Hunter is a big puppy, and I doubt she’ll be picking him up much longer. He licks at her face as she sets him down.

“Beatrice, you know he thinks you’re rewarding him if you keep picking him up when he barks.” Ilaria chides as she offers a smile and a shake of her head at Hunter.

“Ugh, I know, I know. I can’t help it, he’s just too cute.” Bea huffs as she throws herself back on the couch.

“I was just coming to inform you Antonio’s car has just arrived.” Ilaria says as she bends down to usher Hunter from the room. “Come on, young one, you’ll only pee in excitement when Antonella comes in.”

Both Bea and I giggle as she leads him out of the room.

“I completely forgot Nell was arriving today.” Bea shakes her head, as she leans over the couch to pick Sofia up.

I follow Bea toward the foyer as she cradles Sofia in her arms.

Nell comes up the steps as Ant pulls away in his car.

“Did Ant not want to come in for a drink? The guys are still at the office, but he could have come in.” Bea looks towards Ant’s car as it pulls away.

“Hello to you too.” Nell greets. “Thank you, Carlo.” She smiles at Carlo as he grabs her bags.

“Sorry. Hey, I’ve missed you.” Bea leans in to kiss Nell’s cheek as she hugs her with one arm.

We head back into the snug, and Nell holds her arms out to take Sofia, looking down at her with adoration.

“He wants to check into the hotel. I think he said something about him and Nic grabbing dinner. You know them two, they’re attached at the hip.”

I bite the corner of my cheek. I haven’t spoken much to Nic since I left for New York. He’s messaged to see how I am, and he sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a beautiful hamper of toys for Andrea when he was born. Other than that, we haven’t had much contact.

“Is there a reason you’re pulling that face, Cam?” Nell being Nell doesn’t miss a thing.

She’s not even looking directly at me, she’s so flipping observant, doesn’t miss a thing. They say it’s the quiet ones you need to watch. Nell’s one of them.

I hate keeping this a secret from them, and it kinda involves Nell as much as it does me.

“Something happened when my papa found out I was pregnant. Nic was being a dick, and Papa was raging about his children being a let down.” I shake my head at what I’m about to reveal. “He said Nic wouldn’t take a wife, because he was with Ant.” I lower my eyes to Andrea who is nursing.

“Sure, they’re always together, but when they marry, they will have to get used to sharing each other with their wives.” Nell waves her hand like it’s obvious.

“Ah, I don’t think she means in the literal sense, do you, Cam?” Bea tilts her head.

“No, I mean as in they are a couple.”

“What?” Nell whisper-gasps, horror filling her face. “But… but, if they’re gay, they will be killed.” Nell looks to me and then back to Bea.
