Athene enters the kitchen, carrying a bundle of blue-black fabric and the sight of her interrupts my thoughts like a bolt of lightning.

I turn back to Simon. “Do you think Juliane woke up at all before she died?”

He blinks away whatever he was thinking. “Maybe. If she did, it was at the very end, when lack of air made her too weak to struggle much or for long.”

But there’s a chance.

I join my cousin at the counter as she sets the clothes down. “Athene,” I ask quietly. “How long do thoughts stay in blood?”

“As long as the blood is still liquid, though they get more difficult to hear. Why?”

“How much time before the Moon gathering begins?”

“The Sun will set in about an hour, so another hour after that.”

Plenty of time.
