I hurriedly brush the tears from my eyes. “I’m not in the mood to dance.”

Gregor grimaces in sympathy but doesn’t press for an explanation. “The moon is only here for a few hours. Whatever troubles you can wait.” He gives Simon a brief nod and rejoins the crowd.

Simon watches him go. “He’s right. You should enjoy your magick while it’s at its strongest. We can talk about leaving tomorrow.”

I look down at the edge of the shadow. “Are you afraid?”

“Less than I was when my father died.” He shrugs.

“No, I mean of me. Of my magick and what I can do.”

Simon tilts my chin up until I meet his eyes. The brown flaw doesn’t draw my attention like it used to. It’s just part of him. “Are you afraid ofme?” he asks. “Of my ‘gifts’?”

“Of course not. I know you.”

He smiles. “And I know you.” Then he steps out, drawing me with him into the moonlight.
