This time, I reached for her waist, pulling her to me and then throwing her over my shoulder. She weighed nothing, but as she bucked against me, I had to tighten my hold on her to keep her aloft.
“Put me down, you asshole! I can fucking walk!”
I could hear her raspy breath, uneven with the fury that was coursing through her. I hated just how damned much that excited me.
“That’s the problem,” I bit back. My excitement only made me that more furious. “You can walk and you’re being ridiculous. It’s a lethal combination.”
Wrestling her back into the car, I slammed the door behind her. She glared at me as I made my way around the car, but didn’t attempt the same escape. Whether it was her anger that stilled her or the realization that she probably couldn’t walk the 10 miles back to Mystic Springs proper, she had at least seemed to understand that I wouldn’t let her walk the fuck home.
That didn’t keep her from glaring daggers at me as I opened the driver-side door and folded myself back into her little car. I slammed the car door, relishing how good it felt when the car vibrated with the force of it. I didn’t bother to look over at her once I was behind the wheel.
I was still too angry. Angry with everything. Angry with her. Angry with the situation. Angry with what they were probably doing to Darla at that moment.
“You can be angry all you like, Jack,” Claire said, breaking the stalemate.
I maneuvered back onto the highway as I continued to ignore her, just as she had ignored me before. It made me feel a momentary sense of vindication, even if I knew I’d regret it later.
“But if you think you’re going to cut me out of this?” she continued, not caring that I wasn’t responding to her. “I’ll find out who did it on my own. And I will find out and it will be me and only me against them. And you know what will happen if that happens.
“So take your pick. You can include me or you can let me go off and do what I need to do on my own.”
“That,” I said, “will never happen.”
