“I’ve got it,” a male voice said.

Just three words and my stomach flipped at the sound of his voice. Jack. The heat that took over my body at just hearing those three words was quickly replaced by annoyance.

I’ll be damned if he was going to investigate this without me.

I began gathering my things and heading toward the door when the cell phone rang in my pocket. Fishing the device out, I answered Jack’s call.

“I assume you’ve been listening to the police scanner and heard all that,” he said.

“I’m already heading out the door. I was at the paper.” I secured my bag over my shoulder as I pushed through the plate glass doors.

I could hear him let out a deep sigh as I walked toward my car.

“Why don’t you just let me check this one out myself tonight?”

I laughed, a hollow sound. “Like hell. I’m already out the door and making my way to the car.”

Another sigh. “Just wait, Claire. I’ll be on my way and you can ride there with me.”

It was my turn to sigh. I didn’t know that being stuffed into a car with him was such a good idea. Being that close to him was likely to do things to my insides I wasn’t ready to deal with now. And yet, I couldn’t make myself say no.

“Fine. But hurry. I’m waiting outside in the cold.”

“I’ll be over there in five.”
