“What you’re wanting to do right now is to avenge me,” Maggie said, twisting the top of her disposable coffee cup. “That will only make it worse. Remember when Mom hexed your 12th grade English teacher?”

I fought the smile, but the smile won.

“I didn’t realize you even knew about that.”

Maggie rolled her eyes. “Everyone knows about that, Claire. Well, maybe the teacher didn’t.”

“Humans,” I said with a laugh. I was relieved when Maggie laughed along with me.

I was amazed at how much she’d grown over the last few years. She was still a little awkward, but it was becoming increasingly apparent that she was soon to grow into a beautiful, grown-up witch.

“What will you do, Maggie? You can’t go through the rest of your high school career like this.”

“I don’t know,” she answered with a shrug. And just that one little gesture killed me. Maggie shouldn’t be so down on herself. She shouldn’t have to worry about such stupid things as bully warlocks and human teachers who would hate her for things she had no control over. What I really wanted to do was take this Matthew Trenwith out and make him feel the fear of the gods.

“I’ll think of something,” Maggie said. “Maybe it’s time I get a little devious, too.”

I wondered what Maggie could get up to. At that moment, she had a mischievous glint in her eyes. I’d take that over the sullen look she’d had when she’d climbed into my car.

“Anyway,” Maggie began, “how was it?”

The question took me aback.

“How was what?”

She sighed, sounding as if she was having to deal with some brain-addled warlock at her school.

“It’s written all over your face, Claire. You’ve been knotted.”

“Shhh!” I looked around, making sure no one was listening, mimicking what Maggie had done earlier.

I turned back around to face Maggie.

“Well?” Maggie asked.

I was tempted to say something diplomatic. After all, did I really want to discuss the details of my time with Jack with my little sister? That was a negative. But there wasn’t any reason I couldn’t be honest about how it made me feel.

“It was wonderful,” I said finally.

Maggie slumped in her seat. I knew she was at that age where she thought nothing like this would ever happen to her. Hell, I still wasn’t sure that it was happening to me.

“It’ll happen for you one day, baby sister. But in the future, when you don’t have to worry about school and stupid bully baby warlocks.”

“Maybe.” Maggie shrugged. “I know I can’t wait to be done with these silly little high school warlocks.”

Raising my coffee to Maggie, I was rewarded when she lifted her own and brushed her cup against mine.

“To grown-ass warlocks,” I said.

“To grown-ass warlocks,” Maggie repeated.
