My head jerked in time to see a stream of magic fly my way. The blast hit me in the shoulder, the feel of that magical blast burning through my skin. The force of it propelled me upwards, throwing me backward until my back collided with the trunk of the tree opposite the bound witches.

I groaned as my body protested. My back had hit the trunk hard, but the impact had spared my skull. My body ached with pain.

A roar caused my head to jerk upward, the sudden movement sending a jolt of pain down my neck. The sound was barely human. I contemplated whether we would add rogue bears to the night’s mishaps before I saw Jack charging toward a warlock I hadn’t seen earlier. No doubt the one who had sent me sprawling.

As my head spun, I watched Jack lift the other warlock with more ease than I would have ever thought him capable. He flung the warlock to the ground. The crunch of bones breaking sounded throughout the dark and I winced.

Until that moment, I realized I’d never seen a warlock’s alpha unleashed. Two other warlocks came up behind Jack, but he was feral. He turned, unleashing a torrent of magic toward them that knocked them backward. But he didn’t stop.

Once he had unleashed his magic on them, his fists were on them, pounding them relentlessly.

A shrill whistle sounded from our left as more warlocks filed in. I tried to move so I could help my mate, but as the form of Sebastian Cavanaugh appeared, I realized the newcomers were on our side.

Jack pulled back. His eyes cleared as he turned, looking toward me. I could see the moment he registered that I wasn’t badly hurt. Something unspoken passed between us before he turned to Sebastian.

“Where the hell were you?” Jack yelled as he stood up, looking down at the warlock he’d been pounding. The warlock groaned. Well, at least he wasn’t dead.

Whatever Sebastian’s answer had been, he ignored it. Instead, he rushed toward me, crouching down before me, looking me over. His expression turned to one of relief as he realized I was okay. That I wasn’t hurt beyond repair. A sigh left him as he slid one arm under my knees, the other going to my lower back. He lifted me from the forest floor as if he hadn’t just spent himself going after three warlocks at once.

He nuzzled his nose into my neck, scenting me. It was such an intimate action that I nearly forgot the ache that was raging through my body.

“Let’s get you home,” Jack said, carrying me away from the fray, leaving Sebastian and his men behind without another word.
