“Anyway,” Maggie said, reaching behind her and grabbing a bag that I realized was a takeout bag. “I’ve brought you food.”

I made a face and Maggie met my expression with one that was so much like our mother that I shivered.

“I know you haven’t eaten for days,” she said. She gave the ensuite bathroom a healthy dose of side-eye. “And you’ve got to eat. No matter what happens with you and…”

She stopped herself. I didn’t have to be a witch to know that she had almost said Jack’s name. That she knew even speaking his name would hurt me. Likely, she was too afraid that hearing his name might cause me to go spiraling back down toward the mess in which she’d found me.

“I don’t understand what’s going on with you guys, but you’re not going to waste away and take my sister away from me. That means you’re going to eat. Then you’re going to sleep. After that, you’re going to get back to being my big sister.”

“You’re a bossy little witch, you know that?”

“I’ve learned everything I know from you.”

“Terrifying,” I said. But truthfully, I’d never been more proud.
