Chapter Thirty-Five

Jack

The bottle I’d been holding in my hand clattered to the table. The feeling that struck me was so sudden, I could feel it seizing my heart. It was so strong that I was certain my heart was going to stop.

Sebastian had only just told me I wouldn’t feel anything from Claire had she not been my true mate.

And now? Now I was feeling something so strong and devastating that I almost passed out. I grit my teeth, grasping the table so hard, the wood nearly splintered.

Across the table, Sebastian was on his feet. I felt his hand gripping my shoulder.

“Beaumont?” His voice sounded strange and far away. The sounds inside the bar sounded alien. “What’s going on? Talk to me.”

“Claire,” I managed. “Something’s wrong. Bad wrong.”

Even when I’d felt the fear she’d felt that day at the cabin, it hadn’t been this strong.

And then she hadn’t been sending me signals. But I could hear her begging in my head. Pleading with me to save them. For me to hear her begging in my head, whatever was going on had to be bad.

Sebastian hauled me to my feet. Not an easy task, given how tall and broad I was. He held the bulk of me against his large frame and led me from the bar as he tossed some bills onto the table.

Within a few steps, I found my footing and pushed toward my car before Sebastian grabbed the back of my shirt.

“Oh no,” he said, pulling me back toward his Porsche that he’d parked near the entrance of the dive bar. The car looked like a gold Rolex trying to hide in a gumball toy machine. “I’m driving. Tell me where she’s leading you. You may need backup.”

I didn’t have the time or the inclination to debate him.

“It’s like she’s sending me a message.” I folded myself into the seat. I pushed the seat back, wondering how short Sebastian’s last passenger had been.

“That’s a pretty potent bond if she’s speaking to you,” Sebastian said, peeling out of the parking space and angling toward the highway. “Which way?”

I pointed left. “She’s telling me to help them. To save them.”

“Them?” Sebastian asked as he sped along the streets of Mystic Springs. I was glad we’d taken his car. Mine couldn’t have handled the curves of the country road we were now traveling down as well as this machine did.

“Is she trying to save someone?” Sebastian asked, trying to figure out what I was trying to make sense of.

Them.

Fear seized my chest. A blinding hot pain clamped over my skull as my mind filled with one image. Something small and bright. Like a pinprick of light. A little sparkle brimming with life.

“Oh, Gods,” I said, gripping the dashboard before me. I knew my fingers were tearing into the leather. “Claire’s pregnant.”

Claire was pregnant and whatever was happening, I’d left both my mate and my unborn child to face it alone.
