“And if he does?”

Minerva thought about that all through the rest of the evening and as she laid Isabella down to sleep.

Her mother was trying to help, and she knew that. But in the back of her mind she wondered if fairy tales were for other girls.

For the bright, the exceptional, the beautiful.

Then she looked down at Isabella.

Of course that wasn’t true. Of course it wasn’t...

It took her breath away how obvious it seemed all of a sudden as she looked down at her own daughter.

What she deserved in life had nothing to do with looks. Or money. Success. It had nothing to do with what a boy at a dance said about her. Had nothing to do with whether or not the kids at school liked her or thought she was pretty.

She had value all on her own.

And so did Minerva.

Whether Dante ever realized it or not.
