CHAPTER NINE

“WHATTHEHELLHAPPENED?”

“It’s complicated.”

“Hell, boy,” his father said. “I have time for complicated.”

Funny, because he rarely seemed to have time for anything but indulgence, but now that there was a hint of a scandal, he had time. He banished that thought. He was simply raw because he had been talking about Athena. Because it was so clear that Morgan had not understood why he had to bear the burden of his own culpability in the situation. Why it was important.

“It will not make you happy,” he said, and something dark and gleeful rose up inside of him.

Aren’t you angry at them...?

“Don’t tell me the babies are not Alex’s,” his father said.

“No,” Constantine said. “They are not.”

“Dammit. I don’t know what we’ll tell your mother. She’s going to be heartbroken...”

“Oh,” Constantine said. “They’re still your grandchildren.”

A pause settled between them.

“What are you saying?”

“They’re mine.”

“Yours?”

“Twins, father. And mine.”

“How is that possible?”

“The usual way these things are possible. Your golden boy betrayed her. She went to his room, and he was already with another woman. And so she came to my room.”

“And you could not leave your brother’s girlfriend alone? She was the love of his life, Constantine.”

“So much so that he was with another woman the night he died,” Constantine said. “I know you love Alex, I do too. But that does not make him perfect, and it certainly does not absolve him of his betrayal of Morgan.”

“Did you not betray him? You could’ve waited for the dust to settle.”

“But I didn’t. I wanted her. And I had her. I had still imagined that they were Alex’s children. But they are not.”

“This...”

“You can say it. You were disappointed because you prefer Alex to me.”

“And I am disappointed because your brother will never get another chance to have children. You could’ve had children with anyone.”

“And Alex could’ve chosen to fuck his girlfriend and not someone else. And had he not been with someone else, he would still be alive.”

Barely leashed rage rose up inside of him.

“It is perhaps best if your mother does not know.”

“You would have me deny my own children to my mother to preserve the fantasy you have.”

There was a long uncomfortable silence on the other end of the phone. His father was not a cool man, but he was confronting him head-on, and he knew his father did not care for such things.
