My heart hammered a little too hard. Blood magic? That was bad, very bad. But I didn’t know of any spells that specifically required wolf shifter blood.

“That’s the part that creeped me out, to be honest,” Kyle added. “You know, the whole blood part wasn’t so bad. But why did we have to shift for it? Felt fucking weird.”

A perverse smile lifted my lips. I could just imagine the high warlock, needle in hand, approaching the two huge wolves while they fought to keep their predator instincts quiet. “That would have been a sight to see.”

Kyle’s dark eyes connected with mine. That swirl of yellow appeared in his eyes, too, as his wolf rose closer to the surface.

My breath caught in my throat. Was that normal for them? To have their animal so easily accessible. So close.

“Would you like a tour of the realm?” I asked, swallowing hard as a flush of heat swept up my face. “Or I can show you my place, where you’ll be staying?”

“Do you have access to different clothes?” Xander asked, gesturing to the black pajama-type top he wore.

I nodded, an image of their naked bodies flashing through my mind. Last night had been the first time I’d ever seen a male body in all its glory... and I’d been hit with the sight of two at the same time. That had made for some intense dreams, when I had finally dropped off to sleep.

“I can conjure some up for you, sure.”

Xander’s brows rose. “Conjure? Okay.”

“But it’s probably better if we do that back at my cottage, so I’ll take you there now.”

Home. With me.

Why did the idea of taking two men home feel so right? It shouldn’t... at all.

“Lead the way,” Xander said, his voice dropping half an octave and sounding all gravelly and sexy. Way hotter than it should.

I hurried down the street toward my cottage. As we walked, I pointed out the array of shops we had available in the village center—mostly for supplies for our spells, though there were a few that offered produce and clothing. We usually only visited those on the odd occasion when we wanted to retain our magic for other uses—spell-making, for example. I explained to the shifters that, most of the time, we used our own innate magic for almost everything we needed. Food. Clothes. Even building houses.

Though I had to admit, I did always enjoy passing the bakery on the corner of my street. There was something delightful about the smell of baking bread and cookies that just didn’t translate when I magicked the food directly onto my plate.

“My cottage is just down there.” I gestured down the street a little further.

“Everything is very... colorful,” Xander muttered, and Kyle hmphed an agreement.

I slanted them a look. Wasn’t colorful good? My next-door neighbors were out the front of their home tending their garden, but stopped what they were doing to stare as I hurried past with the two huge hulking men on my tail.

“Monique. Is everything all right?” Terrence called out.

I lifted my hand to wave. “Yes, of course. These are guests of the high warlock. He asked me to show them around. They’ll be staying a day or two.”

I gestured at Xander and Kyle, then I practically ran to my front door, my legs pulsing with adrenaline. It was ridiculous to be so nervous about these two shifters staying in my home.

“Just in here.” I pushed open the door, jumped out of the way so that they could walk in, then shut the door behind them.

My heart was racing, and I needed to calm down. I was starting to feel sick.

“A little low in spots.” Xander chuckled, having to duck his head to the side simply to walk around the room.

“Oh! Yes! Sorry.” I gathered my magic, said a simple building incantation, and waved my hands at my ceiling.

The cottage creaked as the roof rose twelve inches and my walls extended up to meet the difference in height.

I smiled at the change, happy with the result. The space wasn’t quite as cozy anymore, but the extra height made the room feel so much bigger. I liked it.

“Wow.” Kyle gaped at me. “That was awesome.”

Xander nodded, his eyes burning as he stared at me, too. “I agree.”
