CHAPTER5

Sophia was breathless. Her heart was beating so fast, she feared that Jeremy would feel it from the way they were sat together.

Jeremy. Not the Duke, nor His Grace, but Jeremy now.

They were still on the riverbank, with his arm around her waist and their torsos nearly pressed together.

“I… I do not know what you mean about ‘other things’,” she whispered in confession. Jeremy smiled all the more, as if delighted by this idea. It made Sophia swallow, uncertain if it was from nervousness or excitement.

“Did your husband not show you anything in the bedchamber?” he asked softly with a smile.

“We…” Sophia trailed off, uncertain if she could utter the words. When she sighed, Jeremy seemed to understand for he nodded.

“He merely showed you the final thing that could be done, noteverything,I see.”

Sophia trembled in his hold, feeling that excitement build. Not once did his arm move. It didn’t take a firmer hold of her, but neither did he move away from her. It just stayed there, resting on her waist, with her wet body so close to his that she could have sworn there were goosebumps all over her skin.

What is this excitement?

“You are toying with me,” Sophia whispered. “What else could be done in a bedchamber?”

“Clearly, your husband failed to show you everything. If you like, I could show you these other things.” He offered her another one of those lazy smiles. In that moment, it was so alluring to her, that she could have sworn she leaned toward him. He must have noticed it, for that smile grew greater. “I rather like you like this, by the way.” He nodded down at her clothes.

She held her arms firmly over her chest, realizing in shock that everything was visible. Her chemise was plastered to the curves of her body thanks to its wetness, and it showed off the parts of her bosom she could not cover with her arms.

“You do not need to hide from me, Sophia.” The way he whispered her name had her trembling again. Her husband had never whispered her name like that, nor did he ever deepen his tone, as if it was a delectable name to utter on his tongue.

Jeremy inched toward her. His lips were so close that Sophia was reminded of her dream, where she imagined the Duke was kissing her.

“Wait,” she murmured. At once, he leaned back, his eyes moving to hers. “Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why do this for me?” she asked. “As you said, it would be breaking your rule. You know me. I am no stranger to you.”

“I am breaking it only to a certain extent, not completely.” He shook his head, reminding her that he was not offering sex, but something else.

What is this something else?

She bit her lip, so taunted by the idea of wanting to hear more that she had to stop that lip from trembling.

“Then why risk bending the rule at all?” she asked in a whisper.

“The truth?”

“What else?”

“Very well.” He nodded and moved his arm at last. She trembled at that touch, for his hand moved across her waist, teasing her with a brush of the backs of his fingers. It was so light, it was as if she was being brushed by feathers, and it made her long for more. “The thought of you is a torment to me at this moment. There is one solution to that.”

He wants satisfaction.

Sophia thought of what he was saying. He wants them to enjoy themselves, then move on.

Is this not the perfect deal as Rachel said? I could experience what a lover is like, without ties and without bonds.

Sophia was so tempted to accept that she shifted in Jeremy’s hold, trying to summon the words. It made their bodies brush together in such a way that she stiffened once again.

“One night?” she murmured in clarification.
