She is as affected as I am.

“Yes, I’ll come with you,” she whispered. “Did you say it was tomorrow night?”

“Tomorrow. Meet me at the theater on King’s Street, seven o’clock?”

“I’ll be there.” She raised herself up a little. Their lips were so close that the kiss was imminent.

Jeremy didn’t think about why he was doing this, nor why he was breaking all his rules. All he could think of was this spark, and the heat. He rather imagined the one candle that kept them company on the mantelpiece had burst into a fire of great flames. That was surely the heat he could feel. It made his hands wander across Sophia’s hips, prompting another one of those delectable breathy gasps to escape her lips.

The door abruptly moved. It shunted an inch against the chair that jammed it shut but moved no further.

“Sophia?” The Earl of Elkins’ voice came from the other side. “What has happened to the door?”

“Go. Now!” Sophia pushed Jeremy toward the door, urging him to flee. He did as she asked. The window was pushed open, and he tumbled outside with his top hat in his grasp. He was barely through it before she brought the glass down, so sharply he had to jump out of the way before it caught his fingers.

He dived behind the wall, hiding himself, as he heard the chair was moved away and the door opened.

“Sophia, you jammed the door shut?” Lord Elkins’ voice was plain with shock.

“Yes, I did. If you would excuse me, Nick. I will retire early for the night.”

“Sophia, you can’t keep running away from me and avoiding talking about this.” Lord Elkins’ words made Jeremy flinch against the wall.

Talking about what?

“Yes, Nick. I can.” Sophia clearly ran free of the room, before Lord Elkins could follow her.

Jeremy crept off through the garden, walking on his toes so that he didn’t make a sound, yet he kept glancing back to the house, seeing Lord Elkins as he sat down in a chair in the sitting room, steepling his hands in front of his face.

What is Sophia avoiding talking about with Lord Elkins?
